The mayor of San Juan is a **** of the highest degree. FEMA has trailers full of supplies sitting at the docks yet the PR government is incapable of dispersing it to their citizens. This shithole is the second armpit of the Caribbean (Haiti being the first). They were bankrupt before the rain came down with a power grid resembling Somalia and were completely unprepared for a hurricane despite being located smack dab in the middle of hurricane alley. It's sad that the citizens of PR elected such corrupt, incapable leaders. If I lived there that bitch of a mayor would be hanging from a lamppost.

Even on the mainland it's the individual state's responsibility for emergency management. FEMA is there in a supportive role.

At first, the Trump administration seemed to be doing all the right things to respond to the disaster in Puerto Rico.

As Hurricane Maria made landfall on Wednesday, Sept. 20, there was a frenzy of activity publicly and privately. The next day, President Trump called local officials on the island, issued an emergency declaration and pledged that all federal resources would be directed to help.

But then for four days after that — as storm-ravaged Puerto Rico struggled for food and water amid the darkness of power outages — Trump and his top aides effectively went dark themselves.

Trump jetted to New Jersey that Thursday night to spend a long weekend at his private golf club there, save for a quick trip to Alabama for a political rally. Neither Trump nor any of his senior White House aides said a word publicly about the unfolding crisis.

Trump did hold a meeting at his golf club that Friday with half a dozen Cabinet officials — including acting Homeland Security secretary Elaine Duke, who oversees disaster response — but the gathering was to discuss his new travel ban, not the hurricane. Duke and Trump spoke briefly about Puerto Rico but did not talk again until Tuesday, an administration official said.

Administration officials would not say whether the president spoke with any other top officials involved in the storm response while in Bedminster, N.J. He spent much of his time over those four days fixated on his escalating public feuds with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with fellow Republicans in Congress and with the National Football League over protests during the national anthem.....

.....

......“The level of devastation and the impact on the first responders we closely work with was so great that those people were having to take care of their families and homes to an extent we don’t normally see,” said an administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he did not want his statement to be interpreted as criticism of authorities in Puerto Rico. “The Department of Defense, FEMA and the federal government are having to step in to fulfill state and municipal functions that we normally just support.”

Even though local officials had said publicly as early as Sept. 20, the day of the storm, that the island was “destroyed,” the sense of urgency didn’t begin to penetrate the White House until Monday, when images of the utter destruction and desperation — and criticism of the administration’s response — began to appear on television, one senior administration official said.

I've been reading the BBC reports on Puerto Rico and see a completely different story than what you guys are presenting. They see an entire island reduced to an uninhabitable state with no way to move supplies inland and no infrastructure to create a support system for effective relief considering there is no electricity, no running water, no communications and all the highways and roads gave to be cleared with heavy equipment just to get food and medicine from the docks inland.

The BBC is pointing at the incredible hurdles the US relief efforts have to overcome and not the pissing match you guys seem to be focused on.

Seems to me the president told the San Juan mayor to shut up because she tried to highlight exactly what the BBC was reporting and said they were lazy and it was their fault.

Might have been that the administration would have realized just how devastated things were if they weren't hanging out at a golf resort deciding on a new travel ban and yelling at black folks for not standing at the national anthem.

From the wapo article it's pretty clear until the press coverage started highlighting just how devastated the island was the administration had no clue

But....hey....both sides fault.

Do you think that's even possible in this age? I'd believe indifferent. Ineffective sure. But unaware seems rather unlikely.

probably sounds better than this

"This is an island surrounded by water, big water, ocean water." By definition, an island is surrounded by water. Not sure what makes water big, but there you go.

This is the President of the United States speaking. I have heard better presentations in second grade talent programs.

Another example of how Christians are only Christian when it is convenient for them:

Vote for Trump so they can get their gay stomping Judge

Look away when Trump bans people from the country including refugees that desperately need our help

Look away when Trump wants to take healthcare away from millions of Children and Elderly

and I could go on.  Christians are so quick to invoke the bible and Jesus when it is convenient for them, and nowhere to be found when it isn't.

i don't think this is really fair Nate.

I agree that there is simply stunning hypocrisy among supposed "christian" conservatives.  I mean, they fail it seems to measure up to even the most basic of christs teachings as far as im concerned.  And yet, they go on and on and on about their christianity.  its one of the most irksome aspects of conservatism in this country IMO.

That said, christians are not a monolithic group.  and many of the staunchest critics of american conservative  politics are christian ministers.  catholic clergy.  look at the pope for example.  he has absolutely shredded  american conservative thought on many occasions.  Anyway, my point is, its not fair to pin "christians" into one corner of this.
