I'm not sure what advantage the Democrats can take at the moment...in this case I think they've done what they should have done...sit back and watch while the Republicans light themselves on fire.

There is an actual potential crisis looming coming up where they might play a bigger role, debt ceiling was "hit" in March and they are now having to use extreme measures to ensure we don't default...this usually means they have 5-6 months until it becomes critical and 2017 budget continuing resolution runs out in April. If the clowncar can't come to agreement for something they've promised for 7+ years...how the hell are they going to deal with something they don't actual agree on?

The politics of this are interesting and show just what an empty suit Ryan has always been. Ryan apparently knows he doesn't have the votes, so he doesn't want to hold the vote. There is no benefit for Republicans to force a vote they know will fail. Specifically for Ryan this:

1) exposes how weak he is as speaker

2) forces his caucus to go on record which is a lose lose. People who vote No get primaried. People who vote Yes get hit in the general. You don't force people to go on record with a tough vote you know you are going to lose.

But Trump seems to be insisting they hold a vote so he can build his twitter target list which puts Ryan in a bad spot. Tell Trump no and suffer the wrath of twitler and the breitbart wing...or force his caucus to publicly drink the bottle of piss.

After 7+ years, and after 60 pointless votes to repeal...it would appear the Republican's couldn't perform when it "mattered". Luckily, they can still get a pill for that performance anxiety.

Interesting to note Trump is on board with pulling the vote, looks like reports he was looking for a hit list were exaggerated or someone pointed out it was politically quite stupid to force a tough vote you knew would fail.

Pulling the vote is a smart political move, because people will be more likely to forget about it in 1-2 weeks (or whenever Trump shoots off his next stupid tweet). Had they held the vote and lost, it would be an official blip on Trump's record. This should be regarded as a loss, but because the vote was never held, Trump and Co. can blame Obama, CNN or whoever and move on to the next thing.

Oh, I agree politically they had to cancel the vote. If they held the vote and lost they would have put all of their caucus on record for no point. Take profiles in courage Ed Royce in CA-39 (Fullerton/Brea/Diamond Bar), he was able to get away with never publicly stating a position. When I contacted his office the other day they were trying to sell me on the Wimpy plan...a three phase approach to improving healthcare.

1) Repeal

2) ????

3) ????

Reality is there are a lot of Republicans breathing a deep sigh of relief for the moment. They enjoy running against Obamacare, but know they have nothing better to offer.

The Republicans blew it because Obamacare despite it's many faults gave insurance to people who didn't previously have it because of cost or preexisting conditions.  Any time you "give" something to voters if you're going to take it away you better have an alternative or be ready for the fall out.  This is what years of chest thumping but no viable replacement by the R's gets us.  It's like the tough guy who gets in people's faces and when someone stands up to him he isn't actually ready to get punched in the face because it was all bravado.

long way to go before we join the company of the rest of the civilized, developed world, but it had to start somewhere. very happy the turd and his moronic supporters have nothing to celebrate today.

This about sums it up...

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) admitted as much as he left the meeting Friday. Reporters asked why, after Republicans held dozens of nearly-unanimous votes to repeal Obamacare under President Obama, they were getting cold feet now that they control the levers of power.

“Sometimes you’re playing Fantasy Football and sometimes you’re in the real game,” he said. “We knew the president, if we could get a repeal bill to his desk, would almost certainly veto it. This time we knew if it got to the president’s desk it would be signed.”

Was hoping this bill would pass so I could have watched the Trump supporters suffer. Oh well there's still the tax reform for that.

I can honestly say I've never wanted to see someone suffer because they have a different view.
