Collins and Murkowski had assurances the nomination would be approved before they announced they opposed. They do a whip count before they let folks "step out of line". If they truly opposed her and didn't want her as secretary of education they would have voted no in committee. But, now they can run home and talk about how independent they are.

So any hope that there are Republicans who will buck Trump is pretty much dead, right?

As long as they can get their tax cuts, rollback regulations, sell off public lands, kill off social security, etc. etc they'll support him.

Maybe you'll get a few who vote no against Perry...who apparently accepted the job offer because he thought he'd get to travel around promoting oil and instead had to buy a second pair of glasses to read Sec. of Energy for Dummies....but for the most part the idea that the Republicans would stand up to Trump was always bullshit.

i used to work for a principal that used to hide behind committee votes. he put together his friends onto the school personnel committee and they would determine if teachers and aides were rehired, if they kept tenure, etc. When the bad news would come to one of us, he'd call us into his office and tell us "the committee decided that . . ." and drop the hammer on us. We all saw through his nonsense but couldn't really do much about it  . . . until irregularities started showing up in the school financial reports. that pretty much took care of him, and he ended up being out of work for a couple of years before relocating to florida.

edge: all of us who outlasted him

edge: retiring to Florida

except he didn't retire. lasted in florida one year then worked in washington state for 18 months and is now enjoying the lovely winter weather in michigan. meanwhile, his wife still lives and works in sacramento. they haven't lived/worked together in the same city in over ten years. it's a weird dynamic.

Did they? The article certainly makes it seem like he brought it up, not the press.

The NY Times article, attire and a few funnies aside, was actually somewhat newsworthy in general. An administration that wasn't ready to go day 1. Newsworthy. Internal strife and Bannon having outsized influence. Newsworthy. How the EO's were rushed through. Newsworthy.

Image result for trump bathrobe photo

Not sure that video clears it up on who brought up the bathrobe...though it certainly is a silly point....

I would go back to the fact that on the whole, the gist of the article itself was certainly newsworthy.

But let's get to the really important news here....do we have a bit of separated at birth here Chili?

He was responding to a question and since the press isn't reporting that he responded to a question about farm futures with Trump doesn't own a bathrobe I'm (hesitantly) assuming that it was related. Newsworthy in a sane world sure but in a Trump world it's a story so innocuous the administration is using it to dilute from other stories. Other than being in the top 0.1% in worst bedhair I don't see it. Though sadly he'd be an improvement character wise with my actual dad.
