People are now panic buying meats because they think there will be a shortage.  Some stores are already limiting the amount you can buy.

This is why we can't have nice things and in part why we've had to mandate things like shutdowns, people just can't act like responsible adults that are part of a larger society. Same thing with toilet paper and paper products.

People are being limited to 3 meat items per membership at Costco and they’re still out of chicken breasts. It’s a supply issue not a demand issue. The supply chains are falling apart because they are designed for restaurants to be consuming a large portion of their products. That is why you have chicken ranchers destroying their chickens instead of selling them. Their normal buyers/distributors aren’t purchasing their products.

3 meat items at Costco should last you 3 months...

News last night was talking about Albertson's, Kroger's and other chains limiting meat as well, in large part to stop people from panic buying.

Supply chain for individual consumption (grocery stores) is a different supply chain than for restaurants in a lot of cases. Not easy to change packaging/processing for what is sold at a grocery store and what is sold to restaurants. That was a significant issue with milk in the beginning. Looks like it's a combination of issues, both buying habits and supply chain issues.

Interesting article on food supply, kind of eye opening how just in time it is and changes in buying habits (both panic buying and people not eating out) can quickly overwhelm the system.

Or the fear is so ingrained in people that they are panic buying.  Millions of people are going to die in the US, so you better hide from the boogeyman.  Governors, mayors, media, all non stop.  They said it, it must be true.  Hide everyone, you won't be able to go back out again for weeks and months.

I think the current fear is because of articles talking about supply chain issues, outbreaks at the Tyson factory and so on.  There's local suppliers that can help meet demand and stores that can cut the meat will have more options but those that depend on pre-cut and already packaged will face supply issues in the short term.  I'm fine with stores limiting how much people can buy especially if that means people who can't go to the store as often like the elderly are able to get food. Most Americans eat way more meat than they really need, myself included.  There's no shortage of produce or other things to supplement what we eat.

We should not be considered with food and supply chains. The beach people are the real threat to our survival.

Why?

It's not like they are all lying next to each other.  There is still a 6 foot mandate that people must be spread out.  And from the beach photos, people have been complying with that.

Also it has been scientifically proven that the Rona does not do well in hot and humid conditions.  I believe they showed that it doesn't travel more than a foot in hot and humid weather.

Heck, I can argue that the stay at home orders will probably have worse long term consequences and are a threat to our survival.

I don’t understand the fear or panic. Scientists and government officials have correctly predicted the severity and impacts from the start. They have also given a very concise timeline for life returning to normal. I see no logically reason to support the people’s fear buying.

I agree just didn’t use the sarcasm button

well sure. imagine if the 'rona got into the food supply, like e.coli. There'd be pretty horrific results.

so far, i don't think there's been any evidence that this can happen.

if our leaders were responsible, they'd head out to the beaches and tape signs six feet apart on the sand.

Absolutely but that's not what I'm talking about.  On Monday Tyson was already warning about supply chain issues.  Reading different boards people in some areas started seeing limits on how much meat they could purchase by the middle of the week.  Yesterday before the news broke about 900 Tyson factory workers testing positive some stores in LA had already started limiting how much people could buy according to news outlets.  After what shelves looked like the first few weeks of the stay in place order I'm glad to see that they're getting in front of it.

Just got back from dropping my son of at his mom's house. There were about 5 or 6 protesters on one of the corners, holding signs like "socialism distancing," and "the numbers are skewed." Weird part is they were all wearing masks, and whether intentional or not, were standing at least 6 feet apart from each other.

Maybe they were protesting in support of the virus?

Another sign was "Newsom's hush money," substituting the s with $. I'll give her credit though, at least she spelled his name correctly.

Someone should put a camera in one of their faces and ask them to define socialism.

From 6 feet away though, right? I was going to take a picture of them, but of course the one time the light turns green quickly.
