Dude, that has nothing to do with the China "ban."

I find it amazing that the virus can only spread in small businesses and on the beach. How scary if it could spread at Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, etc.

It must be [newly unbanned word here]ing exhausting to keep track of all the contradictory and incongruent oppositional positions that you assume on a nearly constant basis. You're the unknowingly at war with himself political forum version of pimpmyteam or whatever he's now called.

I think in the future, if we’re aware that some virus is massively spreading in China or anywhere it is correct and good to completely ban entry from the country in question.  Also, people traveling into the United States who would have recently been in the problem country.   And I would also support tracking down and quarantining the people who got in before the block was enforced.

sorry if you can potentially make people sick and spread disease some of your freedoms get flushed down the toilet.  Tough shit.  We should be much more vigilant and restrictive about this sort of thing.

The challenge with the travel ban on China wasn’t the ban itself, but that it was done in isolation and without follow up.

the virus was already here and spreading. Loopholes existed and people being allowed from China weren’t being screened and there was no contact tracing. The China ban was like a pitchout when you’re down by 10 in the 8th inning. The Europe ban was done even worse, how many people caught the virus stuck in the airport trying to get through passport control. And no screening of people as well.

But the biggest issue was we didn’t start to really mobilize, we treated the virus like Pence does the gays...try and pray it away. We still have no national testing strategy or economic mobilization plans, states are forced to develop their own compacts and go it alone. It is literally right there in the constitution...provide for the common defense and we have failed at so many levels.

you know why the China ban was a waste of time...because Trump can literally point to nothing else they did to get ahead of this and prepare the country that has been hit the hardest in the entire world.

No you’re right, I was just saying that in general. Identifying these things and then restricting travel from impacted countries is the way it should be approached.  There’s no doubt that this was completely botched from the very beginning by Trump administration.

and like I’ve been saying this failure isn’t something that should surprise us.  We’ve spent 4 decades dismantling the ability of the state to respond to anything because the politics in this country have pure contempt for a functioning state.  That is something both sides are responsible for.  I’m sure MT will be pleased with that acknowledgment.  We’re so far along with this project that the next thing they’ll kill is the fucking post office.  Privatize everything !

Anyway,  even if Trumps administration wasn’t packed with stupid fucking assholes we would have had a problem.  Maybe it was made a little worse by the psychotic conservatives all over the place.  It’s hard to measure that.  But still,  I mean there are tons of empty positions in the federal government that they’ll never fill.  Not that all of those are related to this.  But the point stands.

I didn’t realize the flu death numbers people quote are estimates, not actual confirmed deaths. Based on confirmed cases they then estimate flu deaths. As compared to COVID which are confirmed.  puts into stark contrast just how much more deadly this is than the flu, especially when you consider that the COVID numbers are being undercounted when you look at the excess mortality numbers we are seeing right now.

image.jpeg

You are correct on flu deaths. They are not all confirmed and are not required to be reported. CDC uses models thus the wide range of estimated deaths. The graph is attempting to count all corona deaths as confirmed. They are not confirmed. On 14 April, the CDC informed everyone to count suspected deaths as well. New York added 3k unconfirmed in one day. It is also very common for old people to die with flu strains in their system.  The flu is usually not the cause of death and is not counted as a flu death. A corona death can be counted if the virus is found on a shoe or another corona death was in a 100 radius. The graph is comparing suspected corona deaths (which all are required reports) to lab confirmed flu deaths which do not require reporting. Corona also gets a 20 % tip over other forms of death. Sadly, there is nothing to gain politically for either side to expose this. Libs want a shutdown until after the election. If Trump exposes the bullshit counts, he also exposes his biggest mistake which was shutting down the economy.

This shouldn't be a political issue, but it has been made one by both sides.

The federal government screwed up royally in its initial response, which could have greatly reduced the severity of the situation we find ourselves in presently.

This is a freaking disaster of epic proportions.

and the states? Really only 2-3 very blue cities and states that shit the bed. I am ok with giving Trump some blame. He listened Fauci who has been dog shit for 30 years. States still had the ability to shut down their states. Preparedness is also a state responsibility first. The big blues have pissed away billions on green energy bullshit and did not purchase needed medical equipment. Trump was in charge and can't avoide some blame but not one single dem was pushing this as a serious threat either. If anything, Mr Fauci fucked America and should resign. Probably hard to believe but I am a subject matter expert in the DOD. I advise commanders. If I give them bad advice, they will be held accountable for my mistake to an extent. However, they probably won't be fired but my ass sure will. The Generals are smart enough to know the commander was guilty of trusting his expert.

I know.  Yet that doesn't stop conservatives from saying that Pelosi called Trump's China travel ban Xenophobic.  The two travel bans happened the same day and this is what Pelosi was talking about.

https://newsone.com/3900163/china-coronavirus-trump-travel-ban-african-countries/

Quote

The news of the planned quarantine of passengers flying from China to the U.S. came on the same day that President Donald Trump named additional Muslim-majority countries to the existing travel ban that many have characterized as a Muslim ban. Among the countries being added were four African nations: Eritrea, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania, according to CNN. Their additions brought the number of African countries on the travel ban to six, including Libya and Somalia.

In addition to the African nations on the travel ban, the other countries added on Friday — Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar — joined Iran, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela and North Korea. Not China.

Anyways, I stand by my position that you But Flulary folks are simply dumber than those of us that understand the serious nature of the situation and the necessity for the actions being taken.  And I think you know you’re dumb.

Maybe sometimes you’re around smart people and they’re talking and you have to nod and smile like you know what they’re talking about.  Maybe when you meet with people in professions that require intelligence you, again, nod and grin self-consciously when they speak to you.

And it’s ok that you’re dumb.  I have lots of dumb friends. But leave the decision making to those of us who use our brains for a living.  Can we just agree that is the (no pun intended!) smart thing to do?

Dip shits at the golf course I made up I had a sore throat because they kept bugging me to play, hit the town last night. Now you can social distance on the course walking, and I have, so I agree if we can go on a closed golf course and play I don't see why not on a  beach but this one Flulary they always drag along is a HUUUGGGEEE denier.  Already claims his whole family had it in November and he described it as less than having acid reflux. I won't go near him and they call me at 9 all fucked up, get down here.  I could hear all kinds of racket in the background so it didn't sound like tables were blocked off to social distance.  Pull out the paper this morning, oops, record deaths reported again.

What I miss is not being able to see my daughter, who has been in a room while someone died from this and as she describes seeing it, it ain't no flu.  Guarantee Tucker Carlson hasn't. So go ahead, get out there, party on.

I'll post this again.

California created a massive medical reserve – with acute care beds, ventilators and N95 masks — then let it collapse

I think some of this also has to land on Congress and state governors.

Plenty of blame all around.

The ventilators were shot years ago. Masks don't last forever either. "Let it collapse" doesn't seem like an accurate description of what happened, IMO. All of this stuff would have had to have been replaced. It's not as if it would have just been sitting there waiting to be doled out - which the ventilators were at the time, according to the article.

Who said it doesn't? Of course there is plenty of blame to go around. I've absolutely already mentioned that.

The failure to identify and isolate the infected relatively early on is what allowed this to snowball. That's on the CDC and their contaminated and faulty tests.

The thing with stockpiles with expiration dates is you would continue to recycle them in and out to make sure they were available when needed.  Ventilators on the other hand just needed to be maintained, which the article said the budget to do that was cut.

Medical equipment isn't quite that easily maintained. We have equipment that was bought eight years ago that we can't get parts for to repair. It tends to be replaced fairly frequently - except for government entities like mine, that require legislative appropriation for replacement.
