OC Register: Andrelton Simmons likely to miss months with Grade 3 ankle sprain, but Shohei Ohtani cleared to play

Recommended Posts

ANAHEIM — The Angels announced on Tuesday that Andrelton Simmons has a grade 3 left ankle sprain, which is likely land him on the injured list for a significant period of time.

The team did not announce a timetable for Simmons, but a grade 3 ankle sprain refers to a complete tear of the ankle ligament. Simmons is scheduled to see a specialist on Wednesday. Estimates of the rehab time range from 6 to 12 weeks, although it can vary widely based on the specifics of the injury.

The news on Shohei Ohtani was better. Ohtani, who was hit in the right hand by a pitch, was feeling better on Tuesday and cleared to play.

The Angels recalled Luis Rengifo to take Simmons’ spot on the roster.

Simmons, a Gold Glove-winning shortstop, is the anchor of the Angels’ defense, and he had also become their cleanup hitter, because of his ability to make contact and drive in runners. Simmons was hitting .298 with three homers and 21 RBIs.

The Angels could use Zack Cozart, David Fletcher or Rengifo at shortstop in Simmons’ absence.

More to come on this story.

Simba's career is essentially questionable.   No more questions about re-signing him, can't do it now.

What did the Halos ever do to you, man upstairs???????

Ankle careers are usually not career ending.  In fact it is possible we can see him in September

Why the arghh?? Because he can't hit anymore. He's done. Automatic out, or two if he GIDP.

Or maybe you're asking about the first part of my post. In that case, I'll qualify it, "Cozart may get significant playing time."

They had the chance to start him twice last week when Kole was on paternity leave and he didn’t start.  The team knows exactly what he is at this point.  Rengifo who has the same batting average (basically) is starting ahead of him.

I hope that pattern remains the same.

He's good only for late inning defense. Nothing else. And please, no pinch-hitting in crucial situations because of the platoon nonsense.

I think he will start a game or two a week.  I think he will pinch run from time to time.  I think he will be a defensive replacement most nights that he isn’t starting.  That may create a chance for him to bat late in a game if a lead isn’t held.  My belief is unless you bring in another veteran, there just isn’t enough playing time to replace him with someone from our minor leagues, because that person may have better numbers, but they would still benefit more from getting every day playing time.

just can't stand to see Andrelton Simmons go down.

he's a tremendous ballplayer, a top tier gold glove SS, a real clubhouse presence and just comes across as a darned good guy.

He's one of those players you can build a team around, To have him on a roster with Mike Trout and Ohtani is tremendous.

Sounds like he's out until August, OUCH,
