I get some of your points.  

But I am not totally sold that getting a baserunner on first (we can debate the merits of how easy it is to get there, and by what method) is practically a lost cause for scoring a run.

Getting a runner on is never a lost cause. Forfeiting the opportunity to do anything more for what’s probably not better than a 40% chance for most hitters seems to be giving in
