Former Indians and Phillies right-hander Frank Herrmann now pitches for the Golden Eagles and has watched Kikuchi closely as an opponent in NPB's Pacific League. Hitters had "no chance" against Kikuchi during his dominant 2017 season, Herrmann said, but this year has been different, perhaps due to Kikuchi's left shoulder woes.

"When we have faced him, we have hit him pretty well, and that's with a heavy left-handed lineup," Herrmann told MLB.com. "The [velocity] and sharpness of the slider seems to be down from last year. The one positive I've seen from him is that is he's becoming more than a [two-pitch] guy, which he predominantly was last season. He will now flip in a curveball early in the count and uses his changeup to guys that [are] on his fastball. Last year, there was never a need to get away from the [fastball/slider] combo.

I'm not sure anyone can name a Japanese starter that came stateside that didn't incur arm problems. I really can't see doing this again.

The oddest thing about this, and this does seem to be accurate, is that Japanese pitchers usually have their innings controlled, correct?

Ohtani never pitched that many innings in Japan.   Tanaka and Darvish never were really pushed beyond normal limits there.

The biggest hole in this organization is premier starting pitching talent. They have one guy in the entire organization with true ace talent, and he might need TJS. There are a couple #2 talents and a bunch of #3-4 types, but only the one ace. So yeah, if this guy has #1-2 potential, Eppler should seriously look into it. But I'm not sure he's that talented, and like Blarg I'm concerned with potential arm issues.

He's 27 so unlike Ohtani he will be a free agent and will cost a lot more than what Ohtani makes.

Isn't 27 in Japanese pitcher years like 40 in MLB pitcher years?  There HAS to be a lot of wear and tear on that arm.

It looks like he already has arm issues.
