40 innings pitched, 80 strikeouts. A K/9 of 18.

Astros traded him, Brett Phillips (.944 AAA OPS in '17), Domingo Santana (30 HR in '17), and Adrian Houser (their #12 propect) for Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers. And still had/have one of the better farms in baseball. Crazy.

their farm system is actually pretty similar to ours now.  Maybe a shade better.

The Stros will lose Keuchel and Morton after this year.  Do they go nuts and trade Whitley, Tucker and a couple others for deGrom?

And as good as he is and having a similar season to his 2011 Cy Young dominant season, Verlander is 35 with almost 2,800 regular/post-season innings under his belt.  How much longer can he be their ace?

Who the hell knows.

Sincerely,

Nolan Ryan

(some guys just last longer- Ryan, Seaver, Gaylord Perry, Carlton come to mind. Probably a combination of genetics, conditioning, consistant delivery with not to much strain on the arm/shoulder, good use of legs.)

Verlander is better at 35 than he was at any point in his 20's and throughout his 20's, he was a freakin' all-star. Personally, I think something isn't adding up.

Bonds broke the single seasonn HR record at age 36.

Hall of Famers typically don't peak in their mid 30's.

I’m pretty sure this is what keeps him up

Think what you wish, it is what it is since he’s never been busted for anything.

A pitcher gets smarter with age, he’s maintaining his MPH, and hitter strikouts are at record pace which plays into his hands.

Fine. You guys are right, Bonds is a bad example.

Roger Clemens then.

Clemens was better at 42/43 than he was at 24/25.

Verlander is either cheating, or the Astros have figured something out when it comes to pitching. Turning nothing pitchers like Keuchel, Peacock, McHugh and Morton into all-stars.

If you take a pitcher that's naturally talented like Verlander or Cole, and do what you did with the other four scrubs to them, well, I think we're seeing what those results are.

I'm guessing in 5-10 years, we'll know the answer, one way or another.

Or the game has changed Scotty.  Everyone strikes out a ton.  Everyone is more focused on launch angle than putting together a good at bat or a good approach.  He doesn’t walk guys, so he is striking guys out that are looking to launch a pitch.

Take failed starters and turn them into dominant relievers / closers.

Seems to be a thing.

Worked for Edwin Diaz too, though he never had a chance to start and actually had decent numbers in the minors.

Ok, strike three. You can't make an argument regarding athletes natural aging process then tag every example with steroid abusers.

There are a very few athletes in baseball that were effective in their mid or late thirties. Almost none in their fourties when you measure that number against the thousands that fell off.

What Verlander is doing is the less than 1% of baseball players. He is in the Nolan Ryan freak of nature zone. Not the freak of test tube expirimentation.

Don't know if I'd say Hader is a failed starter.  He's a former top #50 prospect and only struggled in Colorado Springs.  Tough to take him out of the bullpen when he's been so dominant but I can see them stretching him out next spring
