I don't know if it's simply growing up, but so many of those "fast casual" places I remember being great back in the day have all gotten way worse.

Especially Panera and Chipotle. Five Guys is still quality (though pricey).

Panera is glorified hospital food.

It's probably a combination of that and tastes changing.  Kind of like how back in the day, Claim Jumpers used to be great, especially their beer selection, but now sucks ass.  Rubio's when they first opened was a pretty big thing, as fish taco's were not really found anywhere.  Fast forward a few decades, and people's tastes really aren't for fish taco's.  But I also remember when McDonalds was good and fresh, and not the sitting in a heat drawer, cooked 2 weeks ago, with minimal toppings and buns smashed like someone was using them as a seat cushions.  Come to think of it, one thing is for sure.  Once a corporation/hedge fund buys a chain, the quality plummets.

Spot on.

You're right. Capitalism makes bad food.

it's never been good for vegetarians. outside of the salad bar, it was incredibly slim pickings.

and that 7 layer chocolate cake? as dry as a ghost town, like a tumbleweed bouncing over your taste buds.

Damn. It used to be that good back in the day. Didn't they have that giant baked potato that was as big as a football?

Panera has always been overpriced garbage. I've never gotten steak at Chipotle that wasn't chewy. But Chipotle has got some of the most addictive tortilla chips I think I've ever had. Five Guys ain't worth the price, I'd rather go to The Habit (which is still delicious and decently priced) plus they have onion rings.

I think he just used the wrong word. It's not capitalism that makes bad food. It's corporatism

It's just an attempt at ruffling feathers with some commie gobbledeegook.

Really what it comes down to is these companies attempt to grow too fast and it turns them to shit. They start off decent with quality and service while they're small, then they start expanding too fast. Eventually they get in way too far over their heads, and as operating costs grow the sales don't keep up, so they start cutting corners and the quality drops.

Some things are still good from time, but it's definitely hit and miss, and just not as good as it used to be.

Once Wendy's changed their burgers and took away the Biggie nomenclature a decade ago it all seemed to go to shit. They really ruined what used to be one of the best burger chains in the fast food industry.

Companies looking to make quick bucks for their execs and shareholders will inevitably cut corners on food and service quality.

Which gives an opportunity for newer smaller companies who don't cut corners on food and service quality to enter the market and succeed.

Capitalism really is the best.

it's been such a weird dynamic to see so many people over the last 4 or 5 years just going nuclear at fast food places. why are so many people this mad when they go to get fast food?

It's not a new thing. You're just seeing more of it because of social media.

i agree with the social media part, but the amount & frequency of fighting is remarkably more. in the past there were fights between patrons but those usually happened in the parking lot and maybe occasionally carried into the dining area. now it's full blown fights against the staff at the restaurant, something that is unusually high these days.
