Even if they turn into '19 and beyond short-term replacements for Marte (cheap, but optionless whereas Ward would not) and Valbuena (not cheap, poss. not good) it's a win for the Halos.

Well, kind of.

Since they were drafted by Dipoto, sure. But we need to start picking higher upside players in the first round from now on

Let's do a pitching highlight from the 2017 draft.

I've got to be honest.  Outside of Adell, I wasn't overly psyched about our 2017 draft.  That is, of course, is based on my experience as a doctor and the fact that I have access to the internet.

the halos drafted 16 pitchers with their first 23 picks.  I was inspired by the fact that a big chunk of the burlington staff is from the 2017 draft.

Griffin Canning (2) - most of us know about him.  Didn't pitch last year.  Already in AA.  19k in 16.2ip with a 2.7 era.  Still getting his AA sea legs.  Watched him the other night.  Stuff is terrific.  He either nailed his spot or was way off.  Still got a lot of swing and miss.  A little time will make him more consistent.  Could be ready by end of year but if so, likely will have some growing pains at the major league level as he figures out how to repeat his delivery.

John Swanda (4) - middle infielder with potential as a position player.  Wait.  We're talking about pitching.  Good potential with low 90's.  Some command.  decent breaking ball.  Work in progress.  18yo last year hasn't played yet.  Likely goes back to AZL.

Denny Brady (7) - JC guy in Orem last year.  hasn't played yet.

Connor Riley (8) - tough first couple of outings but he went straight to the IE.  Univ of South Carolina Aiken.  Solid showing last year.

Jerryell Rivera (11) - PR high school product.  Likely going to Orem.  Small sample good start last year with 11ip, 11k and a 1.64 era.  6'3" lefty.  (high hopes for this kid)

Sam Fuller (14) - HS products from GA.  2ip at AZ last year.  Likely start there again.

Tyler Stevens (18) - worked up to Burlington last year and started the year at IE.  In 8 games, 9ip, 9h, 4er, 3bb, 12k.  Big curveball apparently.

Zac Ryan (23) - 9 innings and a 6 era so far at IE.  but 10k (and 6bb).  44k in 37ip between Orem and Bur last year.  1.95 era.

Tyler Walsh (33) - hasn't pitched yet but 8k in 9.1 ip last year at AZ.  1.93 era.  6'5" RHer.  Out of Belmont College where he threw 0.1ip.  Not a typo.  Played SS and broke the school record for SBs.

Now the crew from Burlington:

I have included a few UFA's acquired by Eppler in 2017.

Brett Hanewich (9) - 23yo RHer.  7ip, 0er, 5k in 4 outings. Low to mid 90's with a good slider.  From Stanford.

Daniel Procopio (10) - 22yo RHer.  11ip, 18k, 1er.  32k in 21.2ip last year with a 2.49 era at orem. Working in relief was low to mid 90's in college at Niagra.  Curious if anyone knows what current velo looks like.

Keith Rogalla (12) - 4.2ip, 1er, 7k.  22 yo RHer from Creighton.  Works in the mid 90s.  Good curve and change.  Relief role last year at Orem with 26k in 24.2 ip.  Control issues with 18bb last year and 4 in 4.2 innings this year.

Isaac Mattson (19) - 6'3" RHer from Univ of Pitt.  Logged 31.1 ip with Az/Orem last year putting up a 1.44 era and 47k.  So far this year, he's made 3 starts with a 2.57 era in 14ip and 12k.  Strike thrower with about 90 in the tank and a solid curve.

Mitchell Traver (20) - 6'7" RHer from TCU.  Low to mid 90's.  Injured most of his college career.  Already 24yo.  Struggled between AZL and Orem last year but 12k in 13.1 ip and a 1.35 era so far this year.  He's already had thoracic outlet  and TJ surg so he'll fit in well.  Got a good feeling about him.

James Ziemba (22) - 6'10" LHer from Duke.  Touches 90.  7ip with 1bb, 4k, and a zero era.  Almost sidearm delivery.

Jeremy Beasley (30) - 6'3" RHer from Clemson.  Low 90's fastball with split change.  2.70 era in 10ip and 9k so far this year (after a 4ip 5k performance tonight).  In 31.2ip last year he racked up 37k and a 3.13 era between orem and az.

Jon Malmin (31) - 6'1" LHer from UT Austin.  5.68 era in 6.1ip with 4k.  Also pitched 2.1 innings at SLC this year.  It didn't go well with 5er in 2.1ip.  Last year at AZ and Orem had a 2.93 era with 28k in 27.2ip.  Touches 90.  Sounds like a lefty specialist.

Simon Matthews (UFA) - 6'2" RHer from Gtown.  3.00 era last year at AZ/Orem with 3ip at AA.  55k in 51.0 ip.  This year, a 3.09 era in 11.2ip with 16k.

Austin Krzeminski (UFA) - 6'2" RHer from parts unknown.  Seriously, all it gives us is that he was born is GA.  30ip, 26 and a 2.97 era at AZ last year.  9.2ip with 11k and a 0.00 era so far this year.

Here's a crazy thing. There is one pitcher from the Dipoto era on the Bees roster.  Seriously.  Of the 16 players who have thrown at least an inning for them, the only guy drafted during the dipoto era is Sam Pastrone.  A 17th round pick in 2015.

Anyway, it looks like a lot of high k athletic types who have succeeded fairly well so far.

In addition to the info from AW, I pulled a lot of the above scouting from Taylor Blake Ward.  Here are some links to his post draft scouting:

Blurb from Baseball America today..

Jesus Castillo, RHP, Angels. The Angels have taken massive steps forward in their farm system over the past two years. The team now has a fleet of athletic outfielders with potential to hit and a growing group of intriguing pitchers, including Castillo. Castillo held Mississippi hitless for seven innings yesterday as the Mobile righthander was in complete control.

Now, the next step is to slowly increase Castillo's innings pitched per start.   He's been right around 5 innings/start since the beginning of 2016.

The relatively low walks count might help with that over time.

He did go from only 62.2 innings in 2016 to 101 innings in 2017, and so he could probably stretch it out to say 140 innings in 2018?

We got Castillo on a deadline day deal with the Cubs for Joe Smith. Cubs went onto win the WS that year, we get a nice pitching prospect who is getting close to being major league ready

Nice trade for both sides

Cubs most likely win the WS anyway that year, considering they didn't use him in the postseason.

But I'm sure the cubs don't mind
