Acuna, Soto and Vlad are the future of baseball. These guys are all going to be great.

Adell reminds me of players like Andre Dawson, Dave Winfield and Dale Murphy - regular All-Stars but not quite MVPs (Dawson didn't deserve his). Like those guys I could see Adell being a 30-30 guy. What will keep him from joining the above three is that he won't hit for a great average. But I suppose you never know; if Adell hits .300 he's going to be great, but .270-.280 is probably more likely.

I'd give it one more year before I say Adell can't join the Acuna/Soto/Vlad Jr. tier of talent. Is it unlikely he does? Probably, but with the tools he possesses you can't rule it out quite yet IMO

Yep. Even Prince Fielder wasn't as "thick" as Vlad Jr. is at the same age.

Definitely something I'm a little perplexed by.  Vlad was tall and lean, as was his cousin.  So is pretty much the whole family.  I'm wondering why Vlad Jr. is so thick.  Part of it probably has to be nutrition, but most sources also make note of just how strong he is.  So there definitely is some serious muscle under the chub.

Vlad Sr. and Wilton grew up in the Dominican Republic. Vlad Jr. grew up in the states and drank sodas, gobbled up pizza, burgers and junk food.

I dislike the genes (or "its hormonal") excuse. Sure, some people are more or less predisposed towards obesity, and yes, hormones are hugely important, but when you're fat it is almost always because you over-eat and/or eat the wrong foods and/or eat too frequently.

As for Vlad Jr, it really depends upon whether he is able to take hold of his weight issues and to what degree. If he's always 30-40 pounds overweight, then I don't see that hugely impacting his bat. Think of all the fat first basemen. But if he gets to 40+ lbs, that's more of an issue.

you are really underrating the genetic part of things, especially in a kid who is 19. I ate/eat whatever I want (and I have had phases of insanely unhealthy eating throughout college) and have never gone higher than 13-15% body fat. Yeah, I was working out a lot but so is a minor league baseball player

Some people just have to watch it from a younger age, and Vladdy looks to be one of those cases. I agree it's too early to say it will plague him his whole career.

huge genetic component to body habitus.  when you're 'plus sized' at 19, it ain't gonna go away.  it's only going to get more pronounced.

some people have to work much harder to stay in shape.  others not at all.  some just can't.  you can't change how you're built.  at least not yet.
