Notes from last night...

  • Rengifo: 1-3, BB, Thaiss: 0-4, 2 K, Walsh: 0-4
  • Jose Rojas has been promoted to AAA, hopefully for good, in the wake of Ward's call-up. He struggled a bit in a very small AAA stint earlier in the year.
    Rojas' 2018 AA line: .304/.381/.554/.935 with 21 doubles, 3 triples, 17 home runs, 36 walks, 75 strikeouts, 9-13 in SB attempts, playing 1B, 3B, and a bit at 2B/RF
  • Ivan Pineyro with a second straight great start: 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 2 BB, 7 K
His last two starts: 13 IP, 6 hits, 0.69 ERA, 2 walks, 13 strikeouts - but on the year, a .7.08 ERA in 95.1 AAA innings
  • Jeremy Rhoades: 1.1 IP, H, BB, 2 K
Rhoades' second half: 16.2 IP in 13 games, with 0.00 ERA, .179 BAA, and 5 walks to 17 strikeouts
  • Brandon Marsh: 2-4, R, 3B, BB
  • Rene Rivera: 1-5, R, HR (2), 2 RBI - who gets sent down, Briceno or Arcia?
  • Brendon Sanger (.326/.453/.535/.988) and Connor Justus (.290/.390/.449/.839) continue to torch A+ pitching after being demoted. Jared Walsh had a similar resurgence after being demoted so they may be worth watching again.
  • David MacKinnon last 25 games: .333/.438/.536/.974 with 11 XBH, 17 walks, and 15 strikeouts. He has a .401 OBP on the year, with 76 walks to 89 strikeouts.
  • Adrian De Horta, plucked from the Padres org, last four starts: 18 IP, 3.00 ERA, 5 BB, 21 K, .284 BAA
  • Torii Jr: 0-4, Rivas: 0-4, Orlando Martinez: 2-3, 2 R, 2B, BB - hitting .325 in last 10 games
  • Jose Soriano: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K - now 0-6 with a 5.08 ERA on the year, but he is very young for the Midwest League at 19
  • Livan Soto's last 22 G/103 PA: .352/.427/.396/.823 with 12 walks to 8 strikeouts. He turned 18 in June.
  • Kevin Maitan: 3-5, 2 2B, 2 R
  • How about this? Nonie Williams last 13 G/61 PA: .269/.344/.577/.921 with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 6 walks, 17 strikeouts. Probably the best stretch of his career.
  • Drevian Williams-Nelson: 2-4, R, BB, 2 K, Julio de la Cruz has made the move stateside. 18-yr old infielder with hints og intriguing power/speed/discipline
  • Johan Sala is hitting well after being bumped back to AZL from Orem: .375/.488/.625/1.113 in 13 G/32 AB - was an interesting intl FA signed a few years back, only 20 years old
  • Emilker Guzman: 31 IP, 2.61 ERA, .224 BAA, 1.03 WHIP with 6 walks to 25 strikeouts, only 19 years old, first year stateside
  • Galvi Agramonte's first 7 innings stateside: 1.29 ERA, 5H, BB, 7 K
  • Connor Higgins: 15.2 IP, .183 BAA, 13 walks, 19 strikeouts, 4.60 ERA to start his pro career
  • UDFA Parker Joe Robinson, a 6'5" RHP, first 18 pro innings: 1 BB, 19 K, .180 BAA, 0.67 WHIP, 0.50 ERA
  • 18 year old DSL LHP Andersson Espinal: in 16.2 IP, only 5 hits allowed - but also 23 walks to 21 strikeouts
  • 18 year old DSL LHP Samuel Perez: 10 G, 26.2 IP, one walk, 27 strikeouts, to go with a .180 BAA and 0.68 ERA

Nice to see Maitan have a good game.

And Nonie still has some life in him. He may be on life support but he ain't dead yet. He has all the potential in the world so it would be nice if he takes his current hot streak and runs with it. Doubtful, but stranger things have happened.

Disappointed to see Jr. still struggling.

I'd chalk Torii's year up as a solid success. The slash isn't crazy impressive, but when you consider he's basically brand new to baseball, there's a lot to like, especially being exposed to actual competition for the first time, and in full season ball.

He's had a rough week, but before that, he was hitting really well.
Overall, his last 21 games: .292/.376/.382/.758 and 9 for 10 in SB opps.

He had a .812 OPS in May, and then struggled immensely in June when guys like Adell and Marsh were promoted away from him.
He rebounded with a .754 OPS in July, being just about the only threat in the Burlington line-up.

It's still a little too early to tell, how he fares next year in IE and really whenever he makes it to AA will clear his future a bit, but with his speed, defense, and a little bit of hitting potential, he slots firmly into '21 4th OF depth.

BAs "Hot Sheet" 8/13

8. Luis Rengifo, SS/2B, Angels
Team: Triple-A Salt Lake (Pacific Coast)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .455/.538/.682 (10-for-22, 6 R, 1 2B, 2 3B, r RBIs, 4 BB, 4 SO, 2-for-3 SB

The Scoop: Grade out Rengifo’s tools and there isn’t anything that will jump out right away. But the sum of the parts, instincts and ability to control the strike zone as a middle infielder make for a prospect with a chance to be an everyday big leaguer. Despite being one of the youngest players in Triple-A, Rengifo hasn’t missed a step after his second promotion of the season, batting .315/.379/.468 through 27 games. (BB)

Per Jeff Fletcher's Twitter:

"Chris Rodriguez, one of the #Angels top pitching prospects, is still out with a back injury and won’t pitch before instructional league. One of you asked me about him sometime recently and I can’t find which one, so now you all know."

That must be one hell of a back injury.

Anybody else have more elaboration on this?

For what it's worth, so far in AAA, Buttrey has posted:  4IP, 2H, 1ER, 1BB, 7Ks.  He's got a double plus fastball to go with a plus changeup.  Looks like he could be a late inning reliever for us.  The trade of Kinsler for Jerez (second lefty in the pen) + Buttrey might end being a huge one for our pen overall.  Who knows - maybe Buttrey could even emerge to be a closer?

Just looking at the relievers, but next year we appear to have Parker, Anderson, Alvarez, Jerez, Bedrosian, Ramirez, Buttrey, with Middleton likely due back by mid-year and, possibly, Meyer being converted to a reliever.

We are gradually building bullpen depth.  This is great to see.

Lots of velocity in the bullpen next year. Ramirez and Meyer were both throwing mid to upper 90's as starters. If they're heslthy, productive and in the bullpen, that could be two 100 mph fastballs added to the back end of the pen.

I am not convinced either guy, especially Meyer, will ever throw effectively again. And if they do, they have more value as starters IMO.

Meyer had enough control problems such that even before his injury, he seemed like more of a bullpen candidate than a SP candidate.  Especially as he recovers from shoulder surgery, it'd seem ideal to slot him in the bullpen to help manage his innings.

As for Ramirez, I'm not so sure.  He's likely out until the middle of the year, then we'll see what happens.

Last night on the farm...

  • Rengifo: 1-5, 2 K, Thaiss: 0-3, BB, Walsh: 1-3, 2 RBI, BB, Rojas: 1-4
  • Bo Way has had a nice rebound year: 51 G/167 AB: .287/.377/.353/.730 with 19 BB, 29 K. He's Rule V eligible. Unlikely to be taken, but he's likely creeping into 5th OF depth.
  • Junichi Tazawa made his first official appearance in the Angels org: IP, K with SLC
  • Ty Buttrey: IP, BB, 3 K - between Angels/Red Sox AAA and one appearance at AZL, he has 74 strikeouts in 49 innings this season, good for a 13.6 K9, with a 2.20 ERA, 1.08 WHIP
  • The BayBears played two; Jones: 1-4, 2 K, and 0-4, 1 K, Adell:  0-2, 2 BB, 2 K, 1-4, K
  • Zach Houchins returned, first game since 7/7; 1-4, 2B, 2 K, and 1-3, HR (8), RBI, BB, K - between AA/AAA (60 G/211 AB) he has a .275/.325/.483/.808 slash with 20 XBH (11 HR)
  • Zach Gibbons had a good couple games, and also is likely on the '19 5th OF radar: 2-4, 3B, R, RBI, K and 2-3, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI. On the year (97 G/351 AB): .265/.338/.376/.714 with 40 BB to 55 K with 7 assists and a .993 FP%
  • Same can be said for Brandon Sandoval: 1-3, 2 RBI, BB, K, 0-1, 2 BB. On the year at A+/AA (87 G/312 AB): .311/.368/.372/.740 with 29 BB to 66 K, and 19-28 in SB attempts
  • Joe Gatto's last 9 games (AA): 3.99 ERA, .254 BAA, 18 BB, 31 K, in 47.1 IP - in fact, take away his two bad starts against the Tennessee Smokies, he's sporting a decent AA 4.33 ERA
  • Matt Ball (6'5", RHP, '13 11th Rd. from CWS) promoted to AA with a strong debut: 5 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 K - on the year (15 G, 14 GS, 59.1 IP): 3.64 ERA, .224 BAA, 1.01 WHIP, 12 BB, 58 K
  • Marsh: 0-4, hitting .214 in his last 10 games
  • David MacKinnon, walk machine: 0-2, 2 BB - now has 78 on the year, and a .402 OBP. If this guy finds a power stroke, he could get real interesting real fast.
  • Brett Hanewich, last 10 games: 15.2 IP, 4 BB, 21 K, 2.87 ERA - 9th round pick last year.
  • Torii Jr: 2-4, K, Orlando Martinez: 0-4, K
  • '18 6th Rounder Austin Warren at Burlington: 17 IP, 4 BB, 23 K, .250 BAA, 3.71 ERA
  • Let's take a moment and appreciate 21 year old, 6'5" RHP Mayky Perez: In 19 G/28.1 IP, 1.91 ERA, .080 BAA (2.2 H/9!!), and 40 strikeouts (12.7 K/9)
  • Jeremiah Jackson: 0-4, 2 K, Kevin Maitan: 1-4, R, Livan Soto: 1-4, RBI, K
  • Jordyn Adams 0-0, BB, R, (CF) and Nonie Williams, 1-1, 2 RBI (LF) were both replaced early in game - I'm assuming an OF collision?

Funny, I saw the box score and wondered the exact same thing. But it would have to be a pretty bad collision to take out two players.
