Watched Simon Mathews tonight on milb.com

6'2 Rher from Georgetown.  UDFA.

Was getting a lot of swing and miss.  Breaking ball looked good.  Cut fastball was spotting on the outside corner to RHers had some really good arm side action.  I think he was throwing a change up but it was hard to tell.  No gun but looked low 90's.  Stuff was better than I expected.  Looked like he has legit back end starter stuff.  Not bad for a UDFA.

Just now, ten ocho recon scout said:

Out of curiosity, why? I dont know anything about him, other than hes from the bahammas(?). Not known as a hotbed of mlb talent.

Is there something in his scouting report or something? (Again, I know nothing about him).

tools.  they'll eventually fix his unconventional batting stance (he's like Blash right now).  He's only 18 (just turned a couple months ago).  Knows the strike zone, has 70 grade speed and apparently has good instincts for CF.  Has XBH hit power projection.  He's not a top 10 guy right now and won't be for a couple years.

Deveaux was never regarded like Maitan who was an instant top 100 and touted as the next miggy.  Deveaux is a developing intl prospect that you put in your back pocket for awhile.

Last night on the farm:

  • Rengifo 0-4, Thaiss 1-4, Ward 1-4
  • LH RP Connor Lillis-White is adjusting well to AAA (11 G/21 IP): 3.86 ERA, .259 BAA, 1.33 WHIP, 7 BB, 28 K - 228 K in 174.1 IP over career with a 3.30 ERA
  • Jeremy Rhoades last 5 G: 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 B, 6 K - might be close to a big league opp
  • Jahmai Jones: 2-4, AA slash starting to look less ugly after two good games - .207/.333/.345/.678
  • How about Jeremy Beasley? 7 IP, H, BB, 6 K - he’s climbed from Burlington to Mobile and sports a 2.79 ERA in 19 G (15 GS) over 90.1 IP, with a .248 BAA, 1.17 WHIP, and 23 BB to 87 K
  • Jo Adell: 1-4, SB (9), Brandon Marsh: 1-4, 2B, BB
  • Connor Justus 4-5, 2B, slashing .308/.411/.538/.950 in 31 G/117 AB since being demoted to A+, maybe he follows Walsh’s career path?
  • Simon Mathews: 6.2 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 7 K
  • Tough year for Leonardo Rivas: .222/.354/.318/.672 but he’s still only 20 and the ability to draw a walk is still there
  • Torii Jr is hitting .333 in his last 10 games. His numbers dove when he wound up the only offensive threat in Burlington, and they’re improving again now that he’s joined by...
  • Orlando Martinez: 3-6, 2B, starting to hit again (9-24, .375) after a short slump (1-14) following his hot start
  • Livan Soto: 2-5, hitting .419 in his last 10 G, and now rocking a .295/.380/.358/.738 slash - turned 18 a month ago
  • Kevin Maitan 0-4, BB, K in his return
  • @Dochalo mentioned Kiki and Millard above

Thanks, @totdprods.

Even when Rengifo goes 0-fer he does something good. He stole his 38th base on the season.

That's more than Trout, Upton and Simmons combined on the year.

So what? He sucks. Completely overrated much like Devereaux.

Lol....  Chuck is not impressed with the early returns on the hype.

Devereaux is a prime example of why I like to see guys play before forming an opinion on them.  You watch him play and you see all the tools people rave about and all the faults Doc points to as needing development. Maitan is another guy you watch and see the tools and the issues why some have punted on him.

Both guys are blessed with ability/skills, both guys show why they are both prospects AND projects..... We are better off having them than not having them.

Yeah, not sure why some people are down on them...they are 18 years old and developing, not finished products.

Seems rash...

I had one too many Scotch Whisky's last night.

You're right in that we're better off having them than not having them though.

I get it.... There was a lot of hype on Devo the Younger, in instructs and extended ST...  He's finally played and not really produced, plus the awfulness at the MLB level has everyone in a sour mood.   But despite the results with Devo, and the troubling "malaise" that seems to hang over Maitan, you see the obvious talent with both....   At the end of the day we need to remember they are 18 year olds...  But I get the angst.
