Bridwell reminds me a bit of Jason Dickson (remember him?): a pitcher who was pretty good for one year, but deceptively so, with poor peripherals and thus a bad bet to continue his performance. I don't see Bridwell ever being more than filler.

Dickson bears little resemblance to Bridwell when you consider the era's they pitched in (Angel Stadium park index was 106 in 97),  albeit,the periphs look similar.   The Stats Inc 1997 annual had Dickson posting the second lowest hard hit ball rate in the AL in 97...  Dude was all about inducing weak contact and getting outs but his change up was a legit out pitch -- Bridwell has nothing remotely close to that.

Dickson was a casualty of the Terry Collins arm meat factory...

I jotted these stats down yesterday morning so they may have changed a bit, FYI.

Thought it'd be fun to do a slightly different prospect update...here's some of the guys that Eppler has traded/waived away.

Trevor Gott (traded for Yunel Escobar):
decent numbers in AAA, but across 3 seasons with the Nationals: 26 games, 21.2 IP, 7.89 ERA, 1.89
WHIP, 12 BB, 17 K

Taylor Featherston (DFA’ed):
’16-’17 MLB with PHI/TBR: .154/.240/.277 in 75 PA, 2 HR, 7 BB, 26 K
’18 AAA with MIN: .169/.276/.281/.557 in 106 PA

Kody Eaves (traded for Jefry Marte):
’17 AA/AAA with DET: .271/.341/.464/.804 in 367 PA with 35 XBH, 33 BB, 80 K
’18 AA/AAA with DET: .178/.283/.333/.616 in 45 AB with 3 XBH, 7 BB, 11 K

Kyle Kubitza (DFA’ed):
’17 AAA with ATL: .241/.333/.346/.679 in 331 PA
’18 Sugar Land Indy Ball: .375/.500/.708/1.208 in 30 PA

Danny Reynolds (released):
’17 AA/AAA with ATL: 41 G, 61 IP, 3.10 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 32 BB, 54 K
’18: still a free agent

Alan Busenitz (traded for Meyer/Nolasco):
’17 MLB with MIN: 28 G, 31.2 IP, 1.99 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 9 BB, 23 K
’18 AAA/MLB with MIN: 10 G, 12 IP, 3.94 ERA, 1.94 WHIP, 4 BB, 20 K

Daniel Wright (DFA’ed):
’18 AA with CIN: 7 GS, 33.2 IP, 6.42 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 6 BB, 27 K

Victor Alcantara (traded for Cameron Maybin):
’17 MLB with DET: 6 G, 7.1 IP, 8.59 ERA, 2.18 WHIP, 12 H, 4 BB, 5 K
’18 AAA with DET: 10 G, 19.1 IP, 3.26 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 20 H, 1 BB, 13 K

Jared Ruxer (traded for Brooks Pounders):
’17 A+/AA with KCR: 24 G, 17 GS, 4.12 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
’18 A+ with KCR: 10 G, 19.1 IP, 4.19 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 6 BB, 14 K – he’s 25 and in A+ still though

Jett Bandy (traded for Martin Maldonado):
’17-’18 MLB with MIL: .205/.283/.336/.619 in 244 PA, 0.0 WAR, 23% CS%

Kyle McGowin (traded for Danny Espinosa):
’17 A+/AA/AAA with WSN: 19 GS, 98.1 IP, 5.95 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 40 BB, 75 K
’18 A+ with WSN: 1 GS, 4 IP, 9.00 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, 3 BB, 7 K

Austin Adams (traded for Danny Espinosa):
’17-’18 MLB with WSN: 8 G, 6 IP, 3.00 ERA, 2.67 WHIP, 5 H, 11 BB, 10 K
’17-’18 AAA with WSN: 53 G, 67.2 IP, 1.59 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 50 H, 42 BB, 105 K K9 of 14.2

’18 AA with BAL: 3 GS, 18.2 IP, 2.41 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 2 BB, 13 K
It actually kind of looks like we traded a younger Parker Bridwell for Parker Bridwell.

’17 AA with DET: 1 GS, 4 IP, 13.50 ERA, 1 BB, 3 K, 2.25 WHIP

Great start!  Had a bit of a rough outing last time but rebounded very nicely.  He actually needs to be added to our 40-man roster this offseason (he's rule 5 eligible), so we might actually be seeing him sooner than I thought.

I imagine by August or September, both he and Canning will be on the fringes of serving as our #6-#8 guys for the MLB rotation.

They're doing well in AA which is as good of a test as any could face before the bigs, and if we go through any other injury issues, I see no reason why neither would wind up added to the 40 and at least serving in the same capacity we expected of Barria when this season kicked off, and both will definitely be in that position come Opening Day '19.

Jaime Barria in AA (age 20): 12 GS, 61.2 IP, 3.21 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, H/9 of 9, HR/9 of 1.2, BB/9 of 2.2, K/9 of 6.9
Jose Suarez in AA (age 20): 5 GS, 20.1 IP, 3.54 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, H/9 of 12, HR/9 of 0, BB/9 of 2.7, K/9 of 12.8
G. Canning in AA (age 22): 5 GS, 23.1 IP, 2.31 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, H/9 of 5.8, HR/9 of 0.8, BB/9 of 3.1, K/9 of 12.5

In Barria's age 20 season, he made 11 starts at A+, 12 at AA, and wrapped with 3 in AAA.
Suarez and Canning both made 2 starts in A+ before getting bumped to Mobile.

They're closer than many would expect, I'd think.

My feeling is while they both could be ready by later this year, we are likely going to want to retain their options and manage their innings / service time.

I think there’s a chance they could both be added to the 40-man roster come September, where we could call them up without having to burn an option.  Canning could be a possible reliever for us in the stretch run, depending on how many innings he has throw up to that point.

Joe Gatto with another strong start last night. This is the best i've seen him stuff wise, at around 11% K rate and 54% Ground rate, The walks are a bit high. Another guys that will probably be in double-A soon, in Double- A i believe we will see what kind of pitcher he is, will he be a starter or a reliever we Shall find out.

The more i see Rengifo play the more i like him. his combo of speed, power and patience are intriguing.

Hermosillo went 3/4 with 2 doubles and 2 walks last night. Meanwhile, Calhoun has accounted for more outs than plate appearances this month (more likely to hit into a double play then to get in base.).

On a positive note, people are getting on base in front of him!

True. And, in all reality, he had two well hit balls last night, if I remember right. They just happened to land in gloves. He keeps doing that, and his numbers will start looking a lot better. Still needs to use the whole field more, but hey...

Feels like he will be treated the same way as they are doing with Jewell right now. Added to the 40 in offseason and used as AA/AAA starter/reliever depth, and likely trade bait as well.

With Rengifo, I feel like he's almost destined to be a decent MLB player if only to serve as retribution for Dipoto trading him away.

Just looked up Suarez career numbers in the minor, and was i surprised by them!!!!!!

image.png.c2fb05cd61b9b7b88a725fa0c40330d3.png

Those strike-out rates the past 2 years, compared to the walk rate. Than comparing his ERA to Fip and Xfip, He's  a hidden Gem in our system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suarez is a guy to keep an eye on for sure.  He's had an uptick of velocity.  Before the season, he was probably considered more of a back-end starer, but now there's a possibility he could be more of a mid-rotation starter if things pan out.

With Canning, Suarez, and Castillo in AA, we do have SP talent depth emerging.  This is why I'm not too concerned about us finding "innings eaters" type starters.  We have a lot of depth about to surface.  If we were to ever trade for a starter, the only type we should consider is a top-of-the-rotation one.

Alas, you neglected to include:

Michael Clevinger (traded for Vinnie Pestano)

'18 with CLE:  7G, 42.3 IP, 2.76 ERA, 1.07 WHIP,  14 BB,  39 SO.

That was Dipoto's trade.

Overall, Eppler has tended to do pretty well with who he's moved on from.

Newcomb is doing well, and I am stoked for him.  The best trades are the ones where both teams do well.  We got exactly what we needed, and so did the Braves.

Yep, the Halos have two lefties already in the rotation now, with a 3rd (Suarez) on the way.   Generation caliber SS defense doesn't come along every day.   And on top of that, Simmons is currently 2nd in AL BA.

Yup.  We got the "better end" of the deal, but the Braves did well too, as they traded a player that didn't further their cause at the time (they were in the midst of a rebuild) in exchange for a future linchpin in their rotation.  As I said, the best deals are those that work out for both sides.  If we somehow made trades in which we completely crushed the other team every single time, I imagine other teams would pick up on this and become wary of making trades with us.  It's good when it works out for all involved.
