instead of trading the money away for scraps, why not just sign jelfry marte yourself? he signed for 800,000, you don't think that he would have signed for 1.5, dipoto? that seems impossible to believe.  what if marte shined the mariners, as well, but there was no media coverage of it? hilarious.

I actually think A's are due for one of their resurgent seasons. Rangers and Mariners are just as likely as the A's to crash.

With Khris Davis, Olson, Chapman,Piscotty,They have a pretty good nucleaus to their lineup. Pitching will dictate how good they will be. I think they might be better than the Mariners. As Seattle's core of Cruz, Cano, Seager, Fernandez is getting older. I could see the A's as high as 3rd in the division.

He alludes to pitching injuries and resulting instability being the root of their issues last year. They certainly used more starters (17 vs 11) and more pitchers overall (40 vs 31) than the Angels, who we generally agree had some awful pitching luck. Is there anything to this?

They used more pitchers, but still got a fair amount (not a ton mind you) of meaningful starts from their core guys

Miranda, Paxton, Gallardo, Hernandez, Ramirez made 117 starts.  They'll have Leake replace Gallardo in 2018.

Our optimal core would have been Richards, Shoe Skaggs, Heaney, and Meyer - they made 54 starts.  Bridwell isn't likely to be as good as he was in 2017, but JC Ramirez has a good chance to be the same if not a tick better and they accounted for 44.  Otherwise, the rest of those starts from Nolasco, Chavez etc. ie 64 starts as well as likely half of those from Ramirez/Bridwell, are going to get eaten up by Ohtani, Richards, Shoe, Skaggs and Heaney.  It would be great if those 5 made a total of 125 starts.  With the other 35 from guys like Ramirez, Bridwell, Tropeano and Barria.

I could see Leake doing well for them, but based on who they have returning, I don't see a ton of improvement if at all.  Whereas for the halos, there could be tremendous and at the very least decent improvement.

Isn't that because two 9 of our top pitchers didn't pitch at all.thus not counted in the 11.

i hate him, and i hate myself for thinking he and the new ownership group had a comprehensive rebuilding plan

got rid of directv ($1400/year), and literally have no choice but to get mlb.tv ($100/year) and find a new team to root for since my regional network refuses to work with any a la cart providers

not sure if it can be the angels, but i'm going to be watching a ton of baseball in april to get it all worked out

You're welcome to join us if you like.

Don't be too hard on yourself about Dipoto. Arte Moreno was duped into hiring him, and a lot of us believed that he was some undiscovered genius who would rebuild the team. He has a way of making you believe that he is the smartest guy in the room, then you see the senseless personnel moves that make you say...What? He apparently went all in on Ohtani, and when he signed with the Angels, he didn't have a Plan B. It absolutely baffles me that he plans for Dee Gordon to be their center fielder.

They used more because he does a shittier job of getting quality scrubs...  As a result they had a much larger churn.   They had four guys make one start and get lit up....   Ironically, the one guy they did have success with and he's talked up a few times as one of the dudes that's lessened the need to acquire a starter, Andrew Albers...  just asked for his release to pursue a gig in Japan.

I can respect that, as long as you do not become a Rangers fan, or an A's fan, or Houston, or the Yankees, or Red Sox, or Dodgers.
