if you're going to go hiking in the hottest spot in the nation during the summer, you should qualify for a darwin award immediately.

But, But I had water

It never ceases to amaze me how people just disregard the power of the heat in the desert, especially there

Did my yearly vacation to Roaring Camp in Pine Grove, CA.  No cell service, just peace and quiet.

Abandoned mining cabin.  Couldn't find the opening to the mine, but the tube at the back of the house is an air shaft.

One of our buddies has no fear.  Did a backflip off this cliff.

Took advantage of the cool weather and hiked Ontario peak. Surprisingly trail was not crowded. Almost felt like a weekday hike.

Mt San Antonio aka Mt Baldy.

This is a close up of the area just to the right of Mt Baldy. If you look closely at the ski trail near the center of the Pic. You can see where they  dropped the fire retardant.  You can also make out retardant elsewhere on the Ridge. It came that close to cresting and taking out the valley.

That lone dead tree way out in the distance on the center of your screen is Ontario peak.

20240825_100351.jpg

The last stretch up to the peak.

20240825_103605.jpg

Left center with all the towers is Mt Wilson. Tall peak on the far right is Baden Powell.

Group I hiked up with.

One of the gals I hiked with has reservations in November.

Gilbert woman swept away in Havasupai flash flood found dead; area indefinitely closed

August is monsoon weather in Arizona

November will be much cooler and not a threat of monsoons

But like always, check the 10 day weather forecast before you go

November also boasts nearly perfect temperatures in the canyon for hiking and backpacking. While the rims are getting colder, warmth still remains inside the canyon and you will find daytime temperatures to usually be in the high 60s, absolutely perfect for hiking.Oct 28, 2022

Visiting Grand Canyon in November - Wildland Trekking

In Grand Canyon National Park in November, there's a 8% chance of rain or snow on an average day. And on the average day it rains or snows, we get 0.38 in (9.6 mm) of precipitation.

august, that's good to know.  Guess I'll try for the December lottery for the wave then.

Of the stuff I might choose to do with an office full of insurance workers, hiking a 14.000 foot peak is not one of them

Maybe you do if that means the guy that microwaves leftover fish is left behind.

i taught for a year at a school in simi valley, and every other year, the principal took the jr. high kids to havasupai for their big class trip. we drove to arizona and got ready to hike down into the canyon. i wasn't able to go that far due to a health issue at the time. there were local indian guides that loaded up the gear on pack mules and guided them down into the canyon to the camp site. i tipped one of them $20 to take care of the kids and their stuff (this was 1991). i left and checked in to hotel and then returned two days later. they'd had a miserable trip. it seems their guides had gotten drunk at the beginning of the hike down into the canyon, due partly to some tip money they had received. they were difficult to work with and the principal had a tough time getting out of them what he had paid for. i was thankful they got through the whole thing safely.

Went up to the east fork of the San Gabriel river on Friday and Saturday. It was hot. Like over 100. My watch said it was 84 at midnight. Was pretty comfortable if not for all the bugs. And there was a lot of them of different types.

Dawn.

Fire damage from the previous fire.

20240906_064541.jpg

Just a little strip of paradise.

Baby butterfly.

Tarantula wasp. What ever you do, never get stung by one of these. It's supposed to be one step short of wishing you were dead.

Strange site. I believe this is an alder tree. At one point it fell, and three trees grew from it.

Also, there is another fire up there. Doesn't surprise me, as last night people were parked everywhere in no parking areas, double parked. Doing whatever the fuck they wanted. So someone was a dumb shit.
