This is actually huge news...probably the biggest news that almost nobody will pay attention to all year.

Too bad so few survivors of this classic clusterfuck are still alive.

Yeah. Super tragic story.

Ive often thought about that event, and all the lesser known ones just like it. Ww2 saw so many ships sunk, planes downed etc...ive always had this weird innate fear of being lost at sea.

Off topic, but at the battle of midway, a guy named george gay was the sole survivor or one of the attacks on the japanese fleet. Was shot down near the japanese ships, floated under a sest cushion till nightfall before inflsting his raft (so he wouldnt be captured). Cant even imagine how lonely and scary that would be...

Quints indianapolis speech is legend.

Glad they found her.

18000 feet below...thats so crazy. They say we kow more about the moon tban the ocean.

Im glad it says theyre keeping its location a secret. Dont want people (would have to be super rich) scavenging souveniers.

One of my bucket lists is heading to the solomons to dive some of the wrecks from the battle of giadalcanal. So many ships were sunk there its known as "iron bottom sound".

The story has already been memorialized into greatness

not to derail my own thread, but we haven't seen a nic cage movie in a while, and i'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Forgot all about that one. Never saw it...but nick cage AND directed by mario van peebles? Must be shakespeare-ish.

Van peebles probably wanted to do another shark movie after jaws 4. The shark in that was better than cage

George Gay. Sole survivor of that squadron, like 16 2 man planes shot down in under 5 minutes, no hits on the japanese.

I think if i remember correctly, his ashes were spread in the ocean where the battle took place, to be with his comrades.

Yeah, the entire squadron was shot down because they arrived at the Japanese fleet early and were easy pickings for the Zeroes,  but their loss was not in vain.  All the Zeroes were at sea level shooting down the torpedo planes and this prevented them from providing protection from the dive bombers that arrived a few minutes later that resulted in the eventual sinking of the Japanese carriers.

Man....crazy. as bad as Indianapolis was, look how far down on the list she is.

The first few are 9/11 tripled and doubled....depressing.

That's a lot of ships to go down.

Could you imagine the blowback that would happen if the Tsushima Maru happened today?

No kidding. Sad too that so many of those were carrying POWs. Did you read the one where most of the survivors died after the sinking, when the escorts went in to depth charge the sub?

The battle of the atlantic is super underrated. One of that made the list, because the crews were so much smaller. But hundreds of ships were sunk in the atlantic during the war.  The german u boats had free reign dor the first 2 years or so. After that they were prey. Stat wise the deadliest job of the war.

Cant even imagine that. The age before gps, helicopters, etc. Getting sunk in the cold north atlantic. I saw a documentsry once where a guy went through it twice. And he said how a few guys on his lifeboat drowned themselves because they couldnt take it. They were on the boat for 45 days or so.

I am surprised there aren't more troop transports listed that went down in the Atlantic.  I thought that that was a major target of the of the uboats.
