May 31, 1964. Second game of doubleheader, at Shea Stadium.

1. How many catchers did the Mets and the visiting Giants use?

2. Who was the Giants pitcher who came into the game in relief and threw 10 innings of shutout ball? He was primarily a reliever in 1964 but later became a starter who totaled more than 300 complete games and was elected to the Hall of Fame.

June 3, 1932

It was a game of excess, played on a Friday afternoon in Philadelphia’s Shibe Park. Two teams combined for 104 plate appearances, 77 total bases, and 17 runners left on base. The first-place Yankees were playing the fourth game of a six-game series against the Athletics, who occupied fourth place in the American League, 5 games behind New York. The 5,000 fans at the game saw 33 runs, 36 hits, 9 home runs, 5 triples, 14 walks, 12 strike-outs, and 5 errors.

Lou Gehrig: four home runs and almost a fifth

Tony Lazzeri: a natural cycle ending with a grand slam

Question: what surprising news in baseball that day knocked this amazing game from the headlines?

I had to look it up, good trivia question.
