Getting back to the unanswered question, this is Lou Gehrig consoling Babe Dahlgren, who was asked to replace him at first base on June 2, 1939. Dahlgren was very upset at the whole thing.

Chief Bender on the left, Bobby Shantz on the right?    Shantz (5-6, about 140 lbs) was easy to pick out.  Won 24 games (and MVP) for a meh A's team in 1952 that finished just a few games over .500.

Nope. Mathewson died long before that.

The pitcher standing on the left is someone I never heard of. He's the only one standing who's not in the Hall of Fame.

I'll give some more clues in a minute.

He had a dazzling fastball.
