Dick Groat.

Heard it yesterday during the Open. Brooks even said his first love was baseball, but he couldn't hit. (ironic) Scary to think that golf was just "something he took up" because he couldn't make it in pro ball.

I thought that looked like Dick Groat.    Groat was also a standout basketball player at Duke in the early 1950s, even being named Helms Nat'l POTY in 1952.    He debuted in MLB that same year, and even played a season in the NBA.

And he won a MVP award while tied for 8th in the league in WAR. Batting titles would do it for you back then.

Especially if you won that batting title as the starting SS on a pennant winner. Those were the days when SS offense was a bonus

thanks for posting this, strad. i knew he was buried there from the tram guy's commentary, but he never pointed it out. got off the tram and searched but wasn't in the right place and never found him.

He's about 100 feet from the Arlington House.  Only about 15 feet from the road, if that.

Of course, they didn't have Cy Young then. He had been sent to the Cardinals after the 1898 season.

Instead, they had Harry Colliflower and some other scrubs.

Feller set an American League record by striking out 17 A's batters on September 13, 1936.

He was 17 years old. That's him cooling off after the game.
