Austin Knickerbocker: one half of a trivial, but interesting, moment in baseball history.

In 1947 the Philadelphia A's had two rookies recalled from the minors and put on their late season roster - Bill Hockenbury and Austin Knickerbocker. Both badly wanted to get in to a game (so they'd forever be recalled as big leaguers). Connie Mack, who was terrible with names (especially as he got older), called for a pinch runner late in the game. He said, "Ok Hockenbocker get on in there and run." Neither man knew who he wanted, but Knickerbocker beat Hockenbury out of the dugout and got in to the game. Hockenbury's name never appeared in a big league box score.

just to keep this on the first page...another interesting story of an obscure baseball player.

Hank Grampp, who appeared in only three major-league games in his career, but was considered one of the best ever batting practice pitchers. Day in and day out, he prepared his team's hitters for the game. His workday ended when the umpire yelled "Play Ball".

I stumbled upon this today on a Facebook baseball page.

Les Mueller, who appeared in only 30 major-league games, but found immortality with his amazing performance on July 21, 1945.

19.2 innings pitched in a game that would end in a 24-inning 1-1 tie, called on account of darkness. No one has matched that record to this day, and arguably never will. He faced 74 batters and threw an estimated 370 pitches.

A bit of a twist on the usual baseball questions.

Of course, that's Ruth and Gehrig there, at a dinner in Chicago the night before a USC/Notre Dame football game in November, 1927.

The man in the middle was Babe Ruth's agent,  but who are the other four men in suits? They're all members of the College Football Hall of Fame.

AO should get some of these.

Two I can get for sure.    Pop Warner and Knute Rockne, and guessing that the other two are Howard Jones (USC coach in 1927) and John Heisman (legendary GA Tech coach and of course who's name is on THE trophy)

You got three of the four. Good job!

Men in suits, from left to right:

Pop Warner, Knute Rockne, Christy Walsh (Babe Ruth's agent), Howard Jones, and his brother Tad Jones (Yale football coach).
