Not saying i would go that route....gambling on one guy signing because you want him leads to carl crawford situations. But if it were to work out that way you look smart.

Continue to build the farm, but don't be totally shy on signing SMART solid FAs if a hole needs to be filled; just shy away from the Pujols/Hackilton type contracts.

Long term growth is job 1.   Just don't ignore smart FA acquisitions all together.  Perfect example for the old timers would be Terry Pendleton signing with the Braves after the 1990 season.   Smart acquisition who filled the 3B need, and helped propel the Braves to being the NL team in the 1990s.

You can say smart free agent picks all you want but that doesn't mean there will be the guys out there.

True, just as long as every attempt is made to sign one of those type of FA's when one is available, that is all one can ask. 

Hoping that Arte isn't through spending long term period, just through with long term spending for the wrong FAs
