Edit: yeah, options are tied to being put on 40 man roster. Once you are on 40 you have 3 options, so when he was sent down during spring that was his option, which basically covers the year.

Coward needs consistent at bats.  He was solid has a hitter the only small stretch where he played consistently.  He wasn't going to replace Espinosa at 2nd.  Escobar was coming back from injury.  The move makes better sense to me a day later.

It likely comes down to whether they can sign Moustakas.

If so, Cowart can play 2B throughout ST to get ready to take over.

If not, Cowart takes 3B and they have to decide who plays 2B in ST  (Fletcher, Johnson, ?).

It sure would be nice to know whether or not Cowart can hit major league pitching going into next year.  If he proves he can't then you sign someone who can in the off season.  If he can then you choose where to put him.

We all know Yescobar's short comings. You're not bringing anything new to the table. You don't replace your MOTO bat because Cowart is better defensively.

Watching your replacement play strong defense and get big knocks has a way of getting a mediocre vet to try a little harder.

Trade one of Escobar/Espinosa for some pitching and put Cowart into that spot. Teach him how to play 2nd base if necessary. Get him up here full time as soon as feasible.
