Win/loss is like mentioning RBIs. Guys knee jerk to it because SABER knocked the shine off of those stats years ago but they are not completely without merit if looked at in the right context.

You don't say Felix Hernandez wasn't deserving of the Cy Young because of his 13-12 record. I wrote an article about how under appreciated Bert Blyleven was as the best pitcher in baseball on a team too enept to take advantage of his run of 9 inning shuouts and one run losses.

These are examples of guys screwed by fate, Hernandez was lucky enough to pitch in the SABER era and got his due recognition. Blyleven had to wait for decades to get a Hall of Fame vote that should have been a first ballot inductee.

As for Newcomb the guy is a lot of potential and some of those losses we're his to own just as some of them should have been either no decisions or wins. We really don't know by either record or stats who he is on the mound other than a rookie being sent to the mound with little help behind him. Confidence can't be high and he's probably pressing to pitch perfect because he's not going to get much defense or run support. That is a recipe for failure.

Next season he may go either way, build on what he learned this year and pitch like Blyleven where the result that only matters is what you can control or pitch scared, which will land him back in the minors.

Hopefully, for Newcomb, the Braves are on an upward trend and he gets the benefits of a young team ready to play. In that scenario is where you will know by record and stats who he is once every five games.

Everyone here would shit on the guy if he put up that walk rate.  He'd be a homegrown version of CJ Wilson.

Yep, though a rookie pitcher putting up a CJ Wilson like season is actually pretty encouraging considering you'd expect growth and improvement as he gets older. Wilson, for all his warts, was a solid starter to above average starter for a good portion of his career.

He was still a douche and annoying to watch pitch, however

Why did the Braves trade Simmons then?  Why did the Angels trade Segura?

Braves will be contending in 3-5 years with Newcomb at the top of their rotation while the angels are still stuck in last place with a high payroll and aging roster.

Ok here's my opinion. The team is playing some solid defense and they're running the bases. We don't have much power and our frontline pitching is very thin. It's all about sustainability and when the dust settles I think they will run out of options.

Simmons has been great, Maldonado has been great but he's already caught more games than he ever has. Maybin had also played well but he relaxes at times. Albert is just a milestoner that has no business hitting in an everyday lineup. People here always ask who could you replace him with so it kinda answers the broader question about how deep we are not. We have a dead body in the middle of the order.

Its been a decent run but we're going to run out of gas and Arte is not going to increase the budget to fix it this season.

May never happen. If it does then the Braves will have a top-end starter. If it doesn't, he's basically CJ Wilson.

CJ Wilson actually looks like Greg Maddux compared to Sean Newcomb. CJ's control, although bad, was markedly better than Newcomb's.

My money is it not ever happening. The major leagues is a tough place to begin learning how to control pitches (mainly because most teams can't afford to be  patient)

Randy Johnsons don't come around very often.

Ok, now list the ones that failed

I'm sure that list is very long...

Sandy Koufax 6.0, 4.4, 4.4, 6.0, 5.4, 5.1

Sam McDowell 7.1, 7.2, 6.1

There are other lefties ranked in the top 100 all time that were wild to start with and harnessed it...maybe Newcomb will or maybe he won't...but he's got top of the rotation talent and time will tell.

But I've always liked the trade...Simmons is outrageous on D, his bat is playing up too and he makes everyone else better too...can't imagine who the Angels shortstop would be without him...Baldoquin???LOL
