My thought too...and that is no reflection on Simmons, who is terrific...If we were in a better place, it would be a great trade.

I blame Dipoto.

Eppler must have seen the reality in the Angels's future when considering the shortstop position.  At the time, it appeared that Balsoquin would not be the future shortstop and may not even make it to the majors.  With the emphasis on defense, particularly up the middle, I am not sure what other opportunities Eppler had to solidify that position for long term.  At the time, pitching was a strength and the Angels were flush with good young pitchers.  The trade made sense then and still makes sense today.  From the Braves perspective, I am not sure I would have wanted to trade Simmons for Newcomb, but they were in no position to compete.

It would be a different story if the Angels had both players, but I think it would be worse to still have Aybar or a "Cliff Pennington" type player filling the role while waiting for something better.
