But his manager likes him. Where have we heard that before?

http://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/mlb/cactus-league/2017/02/26/veteran-catcher-mathis-what-diamondbacks-needed/98451892/

In signing Jeff Mathis to a two-year, $4 million free-agent contract, the Diamondbacks believe they have a player whose leadership skills are strong enough to measure the hearts of two men.

“I think so,” manager Torey Lovullo said before Sunday’s Cactus League game against the Rockies at Salt River Fields. “There’s a calm and an easiness to his personality. There’s also an intensity and fierceness that he shows between the lines that only we get to know about and we see every day. That’s the combination I’m the most interested in.
“But then you throw in the ability to lead, the winning track record that follows him and his ability to catch. Let’s not forget that. This guy is a really good player. He gets credit for a lot of things outside of being a really good player and we’re looking forward to him showing that to the rest of that clubhouse.”

At some point it is what it is with Mathis.  None of us are in major league clubhouses.  None of us truly understand the catcher pitcher relationship at that level where everyone can throw 90+ and the line between failure and success is very very small.  If he keeps getting jobs and managers continue to sing his praise, perhaps it's a real life thing.  The very best talent evaluators in the world give him contracts, there has to be a real reason that doesn't show up in a batters box.

Mathis is a manager-whisperer.

Huh?

He hasn't played on a team that finished above .500 since 2011

Say what you want about Mathis, but it's an impressive achievement to parlay a 1.0 career WAR into $13.7 million in salary.

Trout would have had to earn $700 million already to have a comparable ratio.

Since Sept 6, 2015 , Trout has scored 209 runs.

That is also the amount that Mathis has scored in his entire 12 year career.
