Question: Boston has long been known as a particularly racist city despite being located in the historically liberal/progressive northeast. Why is that? Like what are the specific circumstances that led to that reputation/reality in that specific city?

The big cities in the northeast have historically been divided into ethnic areas. Boston is a fairly small city with large groups of Irish and Italians. These groups weren't thrilled to get competition from blacks. It's not as extreme as it used to be but it still exists. My sister lives on the heavliy Irish south shore area. My AmerAsian daughter, who attends college there, gets asked fairly often "What are you?" which she usually just answers "Way out of your league".

3 Facts about Boston:

  • The first man to die in the Revolutionary war was Cripus Attucks, a black man shot in the Boston Massacre
  • The last team in the MLB to intergrate a black man on their roster were the Red Sox in 1959
  • The song "More Than a Feeling" has always sucked
