Cy Young weighs in:

"Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers. Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms." - Cy Young/ The Sporting News (February 14, 1951).

According to Productive Outs on the internet, this is what he gets for shooting goop in his arm and hoping for the best rather than surgery.

Well fuck them.  How can anyone judge a pitcher that opts out of a surgery like that, which would require him to miss an entire season.

Hate to see this but not really surprising unfortunately. Wasn't optimistic of his chances when it was announced he was opting for another form of treatment rather than just getting TJS. From Richards POV it made total sense for him to try every method in hopes of avoiding the surgery.

Every time he took the mound this yr a part of me was worried that this would happen. Needless to say this is a huge loss to the rotation and to this teams chances of competing for a playoff spot. They really needed all 3 of Richards/Shoe/Skaggs to stay healthy to have a shot. Rotation now gets worse, pen likely will be taxed more as yr goes on etc

Some people just can't stay healthy it seems. Like Josh Hamilton. I know every Angels fans hate Hamilton because he stunk it up in both of his years as a Halo but anyways, dude just could never seem to stay healthy, even when he was great in Texas as well. And then, there are others like Cal Ripken who are durable and rarely misses games, if any at all. Richards could be one of those players who gets hurt like every year.

Which would be unfortunate because his ceiling is "ace" pitcher. Proved it in 2014 before he got hurt and missed the final month and a half of the season.
