I think we could field a pretty popular team of hitless Angels players.  For instance,  Bobby Knoop at 2b.

There's a difference between what we see with Maldonado versus someone like Mathis. For starters, Mathis was a disappointment. He was a high profile prospect who was supposed to be close to, or on par with Joe Mauer. Second, Mathis routinely played over Mike Napoli when Napoli was clearly the better option, which infuriated fans, third, for all of Mathis' athleticism and talent, he was a terrible catcher for the Angels.

Maldonado on the other hand comes with no hype, and is an elite defensive catcher. He'll be splitting time with another solid defensive catcher. 

This is quite unlike Mathis, which makes both him and Perez so likeable. Now if they played over Buster Posey, then Angels fans would get sick of them fast.
