He'd be a good option for a 4th outfielder.  Can play all three outfield spots, decent arm.  Can get the bunt down.  Not a good base stealer but a GREAT base runner.

I'd be down for a Bourjos reunion! He's the perfect 4th OF. Him or Jay, who is more of a 4th OF than a regular IMO.

I like this because unlike last year as the off season wound down and we realized they were going with the "throw shit against the wall approach" in LF they've already addressed a pretty big need that's been an issue for a few years.  I don't expect Maybin to have a career year but he is playing for his next contract which hopefully benefits the Angels in 2017.

LOVE this trade. Maybin has a hard time staying healthy but is a solid player. I wouldn't expect him to repeat last year's .315 BA, though. Still, he used to be a highly regarded prospect but just never had that breakout. Maybe 2016 is the beginning of a nice little peak. I think .270/.350/.400 would be great.

Hell you could lower expectations down to .250/.320/.380 and it would still be a huge improvement.

I think that comparison of Maybin's ceiling to a sort of Dexter Fower-lite is apt.

I'm on the fence about the trade.  I get the feeling that Alcantara is going to break out in huge way once he's moved to relief for a full season.  And Maybin, not terribly impressive.  Reminds me of former Padre Will Veneble.  Oozing talent, but the production will never match the potential.

There is the small chance that this really works out for the Angels though.  Last offseason, Eppler traded a young bullpen piece for Yunel Escobar, who at the time had an offensive season so far above his standards that it couldn't possibly be replicated. And yet he did replicate the production here.  Maybe Maybin has figured something out the way Escobar did and can turn into a .300 hitter with speed and OBP.

As for the defensive metrics, don't pay attention.  Fowler said he rated as a poor defensive CF and then started playing a couple steps back this year, and is now considered decent.  Pay more attention to the tools.  Maybe will be an excellent LF.

He isn't worth the 9 million I don't think, and I hate to lose Alcantara, so on the whole, I'd say I'm slightly disappointed in this move.

if we trade Escobar for a player that essentially replaces Alcantara then the money and players are a wash.  Put Marte at 3b and start looking for some relief help, SP and a 2bman.

Just like with Gott last year, I don't think Alcantara is overly well thought of internally.  It's a reasonable bet to give up a minor leaguer entering his 24yo season who can't throw strikes to save himself for a guy who may have turned a corner.  There isn't a ton of safety with either player and I don't think they make this move if they had any sort of confidence that Alcantara would figure things out.  Victor will be that guy who just around to a few teams and then he'll have a couple of nice seasons at the age of 28/29/30.

I'm fine with this deal.  It doesn't activate the launch sequence or anything, but I think it's got some potential to be pretty good.

Maybin is fast but he doesn't have the required ~ 11 km/s to escape Earth's gravity so you're correct.

The more I think about this trade, the more I think the range of possible outcomes is vast. It is entirely possible Maybin is really good again and Alcantara never becomes anything more than a fringe reliever ... if that happens it will be a steal. It's also very much possible that Maybin tanks and/or can't stay healthy, while Alcantara becomes a really good reliever - and that would mean the trade turned out terribly. So I see those as possible outcomes, as well as everything in between. I suppose you can say that with most trades but the outcomes on both sides seem a little harder to predict than you often see.

I think it is worth the risk and I'm relatively optimistic it will turn out okay. But it's not without risk, either.

Most scenarios tend to result somewhere in the middle.  My guess is Maybin is ok with the Angels.  We'll get some decent defense and spend, but the BA and OBP just won't be there.  And Alcantara will make it to the big leagues on the strength of his fastball, but won't ever truly become the dominant closer or set up man he's capable of being. He'll be one of those middle relievers that will have dominant stretches where you're tempted to move him into the 9th, and others when you just want to DFA him.

Looks like Eppler moved efficiently to address a longstanding gaping hole in the lineup and on defense. Alcantara looks more and more like a never-will-be. Maybe. Maybe not.

Maybin will soon turn 30. And he's an Angel for just one year, unless he really works out and returns for 2018. I recall picking him in a fantasy prospect draft long ago. Never worked out in that long-gone fantasy league. But he stuck around and improved over time. He has been mostly good mostly since 2012. If he matches 2016 but with a few dozen more games played, great! If he hits .260 or .270, still much better than Gentry, Nava, DeJesus, Joyce, the Flying Hawaiian, Niewenwhatshisname?, and Hambone. He can cover ground that can ease the risk of Simba going one painful stretch too far.

Good job, Epp.

So I think this trade is really smart for a few reasons:

1) Maybin can play any OF position if necessary so he's depth.

2) He has a low Average Annual Value of $5.5MM which doesn't impact payroll nearly as much as his actual $9MM salary

3) He will likely play an outstanding defensive LF

4) Per Fletcher's article one of the Braves hitting coaches helped him with his swing which is why he has performed better offensively lately which gives hope he will outperform his career numbers a bit (not getting too excited about this but it is something to note)

5) If the Angels are not in the playoff race at the deadline Maybin is a good trade chip and we will get back something pretty equivalent to what we lost in Alcantara but this time it will be a prospect of Eppler's choosing which I'm sure he prefers.

6) Maybin is an effective base stealer which will feed into Scioscia's love of putting pressure on opposing teams defense.

7) Finally this is a very short term commitment that will free up payroll for next year where we might have improved choices in free agency or on the trade market.

Alcantara would be fun to see if he figures it out but as Chuck pointed out and as evidenced by his 2016 numbers, his walks and lack of control are still serious issues that may never iron themselves out.

Happy with this trade it didn't cost us dearly and likely improves the team for 2017.
