What?

Rates are going to be raised to combat inflation, should we find it suitable to do so.

A modest 5% interest on $20 trillion equals $1 trillion. If rates ever approach late 1970's levels (12% or more), the interest on the debt will crowd out everything else in the federal budget.

That's a catastrophe anyway you look at it. Defense, entitlements, Medicare, everything will either be slashed, or taxes will be raised through the roof to cover those payments. Or both.

The national debt has been doubled in the past eight years. That's a crime.

You realize just because interest rates go up that doesn't mean that's the interest you're paying on all the debt right?  The fed has to raise rates as Brandon mentioned to combat inflation and when the economy is healthy you should have higher rates that benefit savers and allow you to decrease rates when needed.  The spending habits of our politicians already have us facing draconian cuts some day because they won't do what needs to be done now to address the issues.  They won't tackle SS because they don't want to piss off older voters who admittedly should make the fewest concessions but something still needs to be done.  Deficit spending has been a way of life for over 3 decades now which has paved the way for current and future administrations.  Don't kid yourself neither side wants to tackle the debt because they'd rather buy votes by promising "free" services.

I wonder how much trump companies pay in payroll taxes

Dude you always worry about what someone paid in taxes when you are not in the same bracket. And really wasn't it his employees paying taxes on their earned income?  Ok no taxes for anyone, you go do the grade on the overpass so your kids car doesn't just fly off it.  We have to pay some tax, he pays none.  You will never see another patriot like him in your lifetimes.

paying as little tax as the law allows is what everyone does (and should) do.

if folks want to pay more, cut a chuck to the fed or CA i'm sure they'll take it.

probably not wise for him to actually say it though, with twitter and the general populace being mostly morons.

Remember four years ago and Romney with his "47% of people don't pay any taxes!" statement?  The same people that were upset about that misstatement are the same that are defending Trump for bragging about not paying taxes.  It really makes no sense.  Poor people have much less money, ergo they can't afford to pay much more in taxes.

That said, I get what you're saying and agree with it.  Everybody with half a brain or more works the system to pay as little tax as possible.

Next time.  He should just say.  I pay as much taxes as Apple.

Hillary is stomping Trump in the AW poll. Pretty much mirrors every other poll across the US.

This could be part of Trump's grand plan.  Have a bad first debate performance to set the bar incredibly low, and then if he's even just OK for the next two he looks much better by comparison to the first one.

A little tangential to the topic, but PBS had a special Frontline program last night that ripped into both candidates.

Man, they both have a lot of baggage. All the bad stuff was presented. And for each of them, it goes back decades.

I had forgotten how much of a disaster her "Task Force on Health Care" turned out to be. That was over twenty years ago.

And his business history is really ugly.

ok, then why is anyone worried about what Trump pays in taxes? Only people in his tax bracket should voice an opinion.

They kind of glossed over Hillary's Whitewater and Travelgate troubles, but I don't think even 10 per cent of the voters remember those things.

That's because Hillary's entire career has been embroiled in controversies and scandals––hard to fit all that in a measly documentary.
