Sunsets are tough in orange county seeing as the sun tends to set too far north for our south and west facing beaches. The closer you are to winter the better. Any of the beaches with a pier can make for interesting opportunities, pick a day with a storm clearing or coming in and you can get some pretty spectacular shots. Laguna has a lot of litle coves, HB, Seal Beach, San Clemente have some great pier related shots.

Not a lot of fall foliage local, you'll have to head up to the mountains. Eastern Sierra is your best bet...peak color was last week from what I understand. Local mountains are supposed to have some color, but after you visit the Eastern Sierra not really worth it.

Next big event would be poppy/wildflower season in the March timeframe....but again, that's usually desert regions.

Reality is, Orange County isn't the most exciting photo location. Architecture and street scenes are probably more exciting.

the sunsets in maui were absolutely rich with color (and not the kind of color we get from our smog-enhanceed sunsets here). we were there for 12 days and made a point to get outside each day to see the sunset. each day was just a little more spectacular than the one before.

@red321, any places un the sierras you recommend? Bishop?

easiest answer....Drive 395, pick a road that heads off into the mountains and drive up it...it usually ends at a lake or follows a river.

Bishop Creek is usually a good bet, both the road to Sabrina and South Lake have some great vistas. North Lake turnoff is pretty awesome as well. The links below usually have up to date fall color reports for the Sierras.

Convict Lake can be gorgeous, as well as some of the others on the north side of Sherman Pass like Rock Creek, but it might be too late in the season.

At the lower elevations there are some areas in Bishop around the Owens river area, but you don't get big groves of color...your best bet for that area is too look for photos with interesting foreground. I love driving the roads outside of Bishop where the farms are located. Buttermilk road (if you have the right vehicle) can be pretty awesome as well. No trees, but like Alabama Hills some fascinating rock formations.
