The same team management that went almost a decade without a significant arm injury to a SP?    CJ's bone chips -- had them before coming to Anaheim.   Prior to him.... who?  Tripod?

Yeah I don't really buy the conspiracy theories. We're very incompetent at managing and foreseeing pitcher elbow injuries but so is every other team. We're just like everybody else.

I know I started a thread on this previously but it's important to consider that Skaggs, Heaney and Tropiano were all acquired via trade - trades we all saw as huge wins for the franchise. Richards very well may only be hurt as bad as Ervin Santana was.

I think I mentioned this in that very thread ... But some teams have put a lot of time into UCL injury forecasting and I believe the Astros are one of them, so maybe that accounts for them giving up Tropeano for what seemed like not very much (or they really valued Conger's pitch framing). The Dbacks and Marlins aren't exactly model FOs though (unless the Dodgers had that thought about Heaney already) so those ones are harder to explain.

The MRI on Tyler Skaggs' left forearm revealed no damage to the ulnar collateral ligament.

Skaggs was scheduled to start against the Mariners on Wednesday, but was scratched late Tuesday night due to left forearm tightness. At least for the time being, it appears he might have dodged significant injury. Skaggs underwent Tommy John surgery two seasons ago and even with a clean MRI, it is unlikely he pitches again this season.

This happens to a lot of teams. We have just been really lucky for awhile. Rangers, Braves, and Athletics all went through nightmare stretches like this recently too.

You're probably right. But it does make you wonder if the team has bad protocols for preventing/treating UCL injuries. Or maybe the increase in temperatures (heat) is to blame. who knows.

edit: never mind. glad Skaggsy is OK.

I would say, grab the HS pitcher and take control of how many innings they pitch. Kids nowadays play baseball year round and there is no telling how many innings they're throwing. Then you also have to worry about the travel ball coach who is more concerned with winning than the condition of the kids arm. By drafting the HS pitcher, you get them exposed to qualified professionals.

Go Halos!!!

It also really depends on the college program. Some college coaches are having guys throw 300+ pitches a week when conference tournaments start. Some guys will throw 150 pitches on Friday and come back and throw an inning or more on a Sunday.

We drafted Skaggs in the first round in 2009, traded him to Dipoto and the D-Backs and then Dipoto traded him back to the Angels.
