On this date in 1912, outfielder Casey Stengel made his major league debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He had four hits, drove in two runs, and stole two bases.

"I broke in with four hits, and the writers promptly declared they had seen the new Ty Cobb. It took me only a few days to correct that impression."

I think it's amazing how much older than their age people looked just a century ago.

Teenagers look like guys in their mid to late 30's look now, and guys in their 30's looked 60. Life was a lot harder back then. Most of the players came off the farm, literally...they'd been working since they could walk.

Most of us who are old enough to remember Casey, know he always looked like Methuselah, but hell, even as a rookie he looks 45.

Casey once doffed his cap in the OF, and a bird flew out of it.

He was a perfect fit with the lovable Brooklynites of the old days.

Top photo looks like 1950s, and bottom photo the 1920s?

Top is from 1951

There is no date given for the bottom photo, but I would agree with you on the 1920s. Both Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds have yet to expand their upper level bleachers.

This is awesome on so many levels. Love seeing every single man in the crowd wearing a suit.

Looks like even the coaches and manager wore ties in those days. Obviously bat racks hadn't been invented yet, but the water cooler hasn't changed much in 100 years.

Well, you were just a kid in those days so it's understandable if you aren't sure..

Interesting side note about Mack, involving Vin Scully.

Vin knew Connie Mack, and called an exhibition game in the spring of 1950 between the Dodgers and Mack's Philadelphia A's. Mack was born in 1862, during the Civil War and the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Some serious historical time span there.
