He rushed back too soon.  He needs more time to himself to re-strengthen and get back into gear.  I'd imagine down the line it may happen for someone else, unfortunate for the Angels in that regard like Ryan Madsen, it's just the way the chips fall.

We could see Nate Smith now.  He's ERA climbed over the last 3, 4.40 to 4.67, but that might be from just going through the motions before his inevitable call up, too, possibly.

Can we stop with the overreaction? Yes, he stinks but any available pitcher willing to sign with the Angels was going to blow chunks.

What the Angels saw was a guy who had been successful in MLB before and a hole in the rotation. They hoped his arm strength might return and they'd get a bargain. But a team in last place wasn't finding Kershaw out there mid way through the season.

Good points.  The Lincecum signee was a necessary gamble.  It didn't pan out.  Time to dump him and move forward.

There's a difference between not finding a Kershaw and finding the guy who was going to put up the worst pitching season of all time. Baseball has been played for a long time and he could seriously have been the worst ever ... and if he's not, it's close.

Yeah. That's fine but unless the guy pitched like Kershaw it wouldn't have mattered. Even then it probably wouldn't have. Lincecum had a Cy Young ceiling and there aren't a lot of those guys available in mid May. Even fewer who would want to sign with a last place team. He was either going to boom or bust. He obviously busted and has been terrible but what were people expecting?

As mentioned in today's LA Times -- this 'comeback' effort by Lincecum has fallen short but has shown him and all that he probably needs to develop a new pitch -- it was mentioned that if anyone could become a knuckleball pitcher, it's Lincecum.

Remember Charlie Hough with the Dodgers? Was a starter and never able to really make it as a starter, wound up being sent out and shortly came up with a knuckleball -- he eneded up being one of the top knuckleball pitchers (not the best, like Niekro but up there) of his ear........not sure if he ran across Phil Niekro or maybe even Hoyt Whilhelm -- who pitched for about five years (or more) for the Dodgers towards the end of Wilhelm's long career -- but Hough became a knuckleballer and had a pretty good MLB career after being declared  'finished'

Perhaps Lincecum can do something like that......

Also -- remember Scott Kazmir -- comes to Angels, signs lucrative extension contract, flops badly (and the Angels gave him every chance , multiple chances -- towards the end he was being put in game for mop up role and couldn't get guys out in that role !!.

Then about a year plus later, Kazmir is back, pitching in the Oakland then the Dodgers rotation and being effective........so Lincecum done?  Don't count him out -- his starts with the Angels over been overall terrible though -- almost Joe Blanton like -- another guy who somehow found his way back from being 'MLB's worst pitcher' to be in the Dodgers rotation this year and now playing what seems to be an ever expanding/ important pen role for them..........as Dizzy Dean used to say on the national telecasts "who woulda thunk it?"

Cool. So go work on your knuckler and come back when you're 40.

they had to make a move for the sake of making a move.  It really was about a warm body.  Someone to bring in that showed the fans they weren't quitting in May.  Everyone in the org knew it's wasn't going to save the season.  I doubt people thought it would be this bad, but I am sure they felt he'd go out there every 5 days and be kinda meh as opposed to having one of the worst stretches for a SP in the history of baseball.

This move had to be done, it probably should have happened after his last start.

You can't keep running a guy out there that gives up multiple runs in the first and second inning or gives back a lead all the time because it will eventually have an adverse affect on the team when he pitches.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lincecum go down to the minors to try and work out his problems. Maybe he'll find something down there and maybe not. One thing is for sure, the major leagues is not the place for that.

As to who will take his place in the rotation..beats me..maybe Chacin?

This doesn't negate the main point to your thread but does gives some factual corrections.

Kazmir did not get an extension with the Angels.  Kaz was a good dump by the Ray's, but I don't think we gave too much up for him.  Also I think he was out for more than a couple of years before his comeback.

Tim Wakefield was a failed infielder who was about to be pushed out of the game when he developed a knuckleball, and he had a long career as a starting pitcher.
