Angels Claim Sean Coyle From Red Sox

Recommended Posts

The Angels have claimed minor league second baseman Sean Coyle off waivers from the Red Sox, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports (via Twitter). The 24-year-old was designated for assignment by Boston last week.

Coyle once rated as one of the more promising farmhands in the Boston organization but struggled through a dismal 2015 season and hasn’t fared much better in 2016. The 5’8″ infielder batted .295/.371/.512 with 16 homers and 13 steals in 384 Double-A plate appearances as a 22-year-old in 2014 but hasn’t been productive since. After a poor showing in the 2014 Arizona Fall League, Coyle batted .193/.294/.341 in 52 games last season as he battled a trapezius injury throughout the 2015 season. In 64 games this year, he’s batted an equally disappointing .165/.263/.280, prompting his DFA.

Cool, another 24 year old with some promise.
Clean peanut all you will, but Eppler has been smart to stock up on these 24-year old under the radar minor leaguers like Choi, Ortega, Marte, and now Coyle.
He's done a really good job of snagging some really interesting minor leaguers like Jabari Henry, Amendolare, Scribner. I know that signing minor league FA/waiver claims isn't really unusual or flashy, but it felt like an aspect that Dipoto really did a poor job of, if not one he outright ignored.

sounds like another Taylor Featherston -- was that his name?  the Rule 5 guy we kept on the roster all last year, wasted a roster spot and now he's nowhere to be seen -- I think he wound up back in Colorado and they designated him for assignment or something........

Featherston had about 125 ABs for us and mostly sat the pine.

Feather, bless his little heart, has hit .111 in about 20 games for Philly. He is hitting .264 (.756 OPS) in 87 games for AAA Lehigh Valley with 12 bombs and 16 E5s.
