I agree that if a full rebuild takes more than five years we would lose Trout assuming Trout doesn't want to be a one team guy.  Also if the team is on the brink of being a very good team he could stick around.  Lastly, Arte could just decide to make Trout an offer he can't refuse.

I would not mind that at all. An over payment but well worth it when he goes into the HOF as an Angel.

Hector Santiago's stock is at its peak right now after that shut out performance and with two weeks left before the trade deadline.

The time to sell is NOW. Best returns. Sell HIGH, buy LOW........there's a about a two week window here with an eye towards being competitive in 2018.

2016 right now is pretty much past tense for the Halos; not a lot of hope to be in contention in 2017 -- so make plans with 2018 in mind.

If we were to start winning now, I doubt we make the playoffs.

Also it would show we only started winning once the pressure was off.

Not really, because something like only 12 of the remaining 71 games are against teams with a losing record.

You're assuming that money is the most important thing in life to Mike Trout. Trout knows that the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies and O's will all be there ready to pounce. Mike Trout is not going sign another extension. He will have the opportunity to become the biggest free agent in MLB history. He's going to go for it and nobody can blame him. It's the American way. It's not necessarily about the money. He may seek a change in venue for his family.
