Let's see ... the Angels traded Gott/Brady for Escobar/$1.5M in return.

Can we expect more back in a trade?

I think so. Teams pay a little more mid season and I think part of why we got Escobar on the cheap side is teams weren't sure if he could replicate his '15 numbers, which he's done this season.

I'd like to say yes because when we got him there was a lot of skepticism regarding his hitting performance last year. Until then he hadn't hit above .258 since 2011 so most of us were hoping for something in the .280 range this year, yet he has managed to almost duplicate last year line by hitting .310 so far this season.

Unfortunately we were also expecting something of a bounce back defensively, considering he was a shortstop playing his first season at third. That has not happened, and defense stats suggest he is playing worse at third this year than he did last year.

I know you aren't a fan of war or projections but despite the offensive performance to date, zips still expects him to finish at 1.5 for the year, a total solidly below league average for a starting caliber player.

So, a .300 hitter who can lead off will be leaving for some prospects who may or may not pan out a couple years from now.

Makes sense.

Makes so much sense to keep him with a team 8.5 games out of a wildcard.

If the Angels weren't destined to have a high draft pick I'd say keep him as a leadoff and look at picking up his option. But it is obvious nothing is going to get accomplished this season and the Angels have to start building a team from the minors on up so Escobar looks like the right guy to get some talent infused into a minor league that has virtually nothing in A, A+, AA or simply a two or more year gap without talent making it to the majors.

Ok, so trading away a defensive liability that is prone to making boneheaded plays, that could possibly give you a decent return is not being intelligent?

Let's make sure we get a decent return then. How many teams will even want Escobar, if he's that much of a liability? His price has been discounted if that's the case. You're talking about offering a team something out of the bargain bin for some mid-to-lower tier prospects? I would want an established major leaguer. Who's out there that we can reliably count on to help us?

I'd be down for one of Williamson/Parker/Suarez and another piece like Blach. Teams aren't going to ignore the atrocious defense/base running but his bat fits near the top of any lineup. I think teams were skeptical of his 2015 season inflated by the high BABIP but he's doing the same thing this year so I believe the Angels can get much more in return than what they gave up for him(Gott/Brady).

We're not going to get an established major leaguer, nor do we need to. We would want someone with a good shot at being a major leaguer in a couple years. We need to punt this year AND next and retool for 2018 and later.

The fact is that Escobar has been the best we've had at third base in a very long time. Personally, I have no problem with his defense or base running. As always everything is overly exaggerated here. Yes, I watch all the games.

There's no way the Angels are going to pack it in for 2017. It's not happening guys.

I don't have a problem if traded but it does create a hole in the lineup.  I trust Eppler more than I have any of the past GM's.

There's no way they're going to be a playoff-caliber team in 2017 (barring a 180 from management...or an ownership change), so if they don't pack it in, they're stupid.
