Jose Reyes Placed on Waivers

Recommended Posts

Because of the low risk — Reyes is owed approximately $38 million by the Rockies through next season, meaning he would earn a prorated share of the league minimum — the Mets are seriously considering bringing back the franchise leader in triples and stolen bases. However, an industry source said the Mets have expressed reservations about bringing the 33-year-old back after he was charged with domestic violence against his wife in the fall and served a 53-game suspension to start this season.

Major League Minimum and prorated at that! He can still run and a play a little defense!

Before you guys bust out his SS Defensive rank #'s..... Put him at 2nd less range required and less arm strength (exception of turning two which he can flip it then)..His defense in the amount of games this year at SS was better than the last couple and fielding % wise his best ever.. Maybe, bat him 2nd/1st swapping with Escobar depending on Lefty/Righty. Then again Maybe not and just let them finish it out~ Is he a huge upgrade over Gia probably not. But, he might get more fastballs and be placed in more fastball counts hitting in between Escobar and Trout! Which would help in giving Mike more base runners on in front of him. He can steal a base.

I don't know I'm reaching for crap in a poor season~

He played 2B previously when the Mets used Kaz Matsui at SS which didn't work out.

He has speed and can play MI but he isn't what he used to be.  Worst case is he doesn't work out and he gets cut low risk / high reward.

He isn't a bad guy but he is a bit of a showboat but in a playful way.  I am not condoning his domestic abuse incident which is a PR issue.

If he rebuilds value, he can be traded at the deadline to a contender looking for what he brings to the table.

Jose Reyes was arrested on Halloween after allegedly assaulting his wife in Hawaii.

Hawaii News Now reported Reyes is out on bail. The assault allegedly occurred in a Maui hotel room. The report said Reyes grabbed his wife, Katherine Ramirez, by the throat and shoved her into a sliding glass door during an argument.

According to the news station, hotel security called police, and the 32-year-old Reyes was arrested in the room.

Ramirez reportedly had sustained injuries to her thigh, neck and wrist.

The charges were ultimately dropped when Katherine refused to cooperate with prosecutors.

Reyes will most probably be signed by the Mets tomorrow at 2 PM ET when he will become a FA for the prorated minimum salary under $ 300,000 while the Rockies will be on the hook for $ 39 MM.  He is a diminished player from what he was but even @ 50% he provides speed and MI spark.  Absorb the PR by making him publicly atone for his ways and he will be the MLB poster face for the cause.  Everybody deserves a 2nd chance, then deal him at the deadline for prospects if he rebuilds value at below market contract.

Why? To what ends? At his peak he wouldn't have been able to save this team and I doubt he's even 50% of that guy. Best case this guy is a 1.5 WAR player the rest of the way who apologizes and causes no headaches beyond the initial backlash of signing a guy who beat his wife.

Let's say things don't go best case... I don't care if he freaking stinks at baseball. Maybe he's a negative .5 WAR the rest of the way out. Doesn't make a difference. Hopefully whoever's spot he takes on the 40 man roster wasn't good. But the real worst case is he relapses and beats his wife again.

I wouldn't sign him even if he were good like Aroldis Chapman and even if he were guaranteed never to relapse, but I can understand second chances and that he wasn't convicted of anything. That being said, even if you believe those two things are paramount, in this specific instance the risk isn't worth the potential reward.
