Because

He's bench depth and a LH bat. He'll be backdown as soon as Pennington is back up. I think everyone was reading too much into this move.

I think the complaint is he will just sit on the bench instead of getting much needed ABs.

Yeah Cowart wouldn't be up if we hadn't signed Lincecum.

When we signed Timmy we had to go through that two day period with 24 players, and Marte was the corner infielder on the bench who had to be bumped to make room for Timmy. We needed all the relievers we could get at the time. Since it wasn't ten days or replacing an injury, we couldn't recall Marte after Lincecum's two-day roster stint passed, so it was going to be Cowart or Kubitza recalled to offer some infield depth, and they appear to have valued Cowart's defense.

Why him for bench depth.  You would think lack of ABs  would hurt him.  Either play or send him down.  There was no need to bring him up for bench depth.  We have a lot of people who can play that role.

Now that explanation makes sense.  I thought Martel had passed ten days already.

My thoughts exactly

Cowart's job is to be where the Angels think they might need him. If somebody gets hurt, he goes in. If there's a sudden need for a pinch hitter who's not named Brendan Ryan, he can do that. And when Pennington is ready to play again, maybe Cowart will be needed in SLC to stay ready for the next time.
