When you aren't great defensively, nor are you a great baserunner, you are expected to mash.  Cron should be a consistent 20 hr / 80 rbi guy every year.  I'm not sure he is that.  We should look for that.

This.

This is sort of why I bring up his only having had 755 at bats for his career...   Have you looked at CJ Cron's numbers 162 game season numbers?   http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/croncj01.shtml      So, 162 games, 525 ABs, 21 HRs, 74 RBI.  728 OPS, 105 OPS+

Basically, CJ Cron is exactly what you say he needs to be -- he's just streaky as all hell and he hasn't been around long enough for him to have an established track record.

His biggest problem is that because the team has so many issues at other positions, people want him to be more than what he already is.

James Loney anyone?

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that James Loney's representatives plan to contact the Mets to gauge interest.

Lucas Duda is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his back, so it could be a natural fit. Sherman hears that the Mets at least have "some curiosity" about the possibility. Loney, 32, is batting .333/.368/.417 with two home runs and 23 RBI over 39 games with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate. He has the ability to opt of his minor league deal if he finds an opportunity in the majors.

Absolutely no interest at all. He had two good seasons early on as a Dodger then he went from replacement level to absolute garbage then back to replacement level. Cron is better.

Agree with Chuck on this one. Cron's been way to streaky and the cold streaks have been brutal. After 3 years in the show you have a good idea on what kind of player you have. He needs to be moved down the depth chart if he doesn't get hot in the next week or two.

You missed some key stats Chuck

CJ

in 38 AB  RISP he is batting .368 OPS is .879

men on base he is batting .310

Trout

in 35 AB  Risp he is batting .286  OPS .809

men on base he is batting .300

So no he is not awful.

People bash his approach, but his approach is better this year than it was last year, and that isn't even a question.  He is walking a ton more and striking out less.  Is he good to great, no, is he the best we can throw out there, absolutely.  This is like Albert hitting 4th, it is only a valid complaint when there are better options being ignored.

This is why I wanted them to try and sign a guy like Trumbo or Chris Carter.  I really wanted them to go for Carter this past offseason when it was clear they weren't going to spend big on LF.  Seemed like a good guy to take a flier on.  He's just as bad a defender as Cron, but he has a lot more power which he has shown plenty of this season.

The definition of a replacement level player is that they can be easily replaced.

You are, of course, assuming we have someone even at "replacement level" to replace him.

Who you going with...the 29 year old Nick Buss?  Cowart and/or Kubitza who can barely push .800 OPS in the PCL?  Career minor leaguer Cunnigham?  "No Swing" Choi?

CJ Cron makes the Tower of Terror ride at California Adventure look like it never gets off the ground.

2016 first 59 at bats - .462 OPS

2016 next 45 at bats - 1.188 OPS

2016 next 31 at bats - .312 OPS

Way too streaky for my taste.

Yeah, he will go through those phases where he can carry an offense but he can be awful for long periods. Overall he works out to be a bit above average as a hitter and we should be expecting an OPS+ in the 105 range (he is at 91 now). However, when you can only play first base (and do so poorly) and provide negative baserunning ability that makes you a pretty crappy ballplayer. I think we need to accept he is just a replacement level guy, who you might ideally have as a platoon bat but really shouldn't be someone you are constantly relying on. Without any better options we're stuck with him, but the evidence is increasingly strong that he is a poor man's Trumbo without the ability to play the outfield - making him not very valuable at all.
