I'm starting to believe this team is cursed

Recommended Posts

It's unlucky to be superstitious.

I don't normally believe in superstitions like religion or curses. It goes against the rational poker playing half of my brain.

However, the irrational half can't help but point out that ever since Arte Moreno bought this team, there have been an inordinate amount of bad things that have happened. Some have been utterly tragic (Adenhart), some have been bad decisions (Private Matthews, Wells, Pujols, Hamilton, and Scioscia's extension to name a few), but many have just been really fluky (Richards' injuries in 2014 and this year, Skaggs, Wilson, and now Simmons).

It's hard not to think of curses when all of the above shit has happened in little more than a decade.

I think I have a solution, though.

Arte must sell the team. This is Arte's Curse.

Maybe the team just hasn't won in 15 years and there's no curse.

Every organization has good teams that don't win. Many have tragic stories of players dying. Many teams are just purely run like the team had been for the last half decade.

Before 2002 we had Donnie Moore, the collapse of 95, traded away Edmunds, signed Moo instead of Randy Johnson, and Vaughn feel in the dugout immediately.

In 2002 there was going to be a strike that cancelled the season midway through. It didn't happen.

It's amazing that in the only season the Angels weren't cursed they won the World Series. If other teams had to deal with being cursed they'd never win. Conversely if the Angels had as good if luck as other clubs they'd probably have 50 World Series trophies by now.

Change is coming under Eppler.  Mike has won a couple power struggles but his run as the most secure manager in MLB is coming to an end, barring a miraculous turnaround which doesn't look likely.  Managers just tend to reach that point where their message and effectiveness degrade, and in Mike's case he also is at his best when he's running an aggressive style of ball he likes best.

I expect Eppler will bring in a manager who believes in the modern OBP  and analytics approach and can manage it, tie it in effortlessly to what they do daily, etc.  Sciosh just isn't that guy in my opinion, and he also needs to recharge and start fresh somewhere else.
