If you think about it Dee Gordon is going to give up one million dollars in lost salary (as a result of his suspension) to gain his $49M contract.

I honestly think steroids are still relatively common in baseball. The technology to mask the drugs is ahead of the detection process and as long as the chances are small of getting caught players will continue to take steroids because the risk/reward is in their favor.

 

Gordon is a perfect example of the reward associated with taking that risk due to his lost income being just a small percentage of his new contract.

What needs to happen is when a player tests positive the team should have the right to void the contract at the end of the year the player was suspended.

If only they'd been given a choice, such as not signing Dee Gordon to an extension when he had several years of team control remaining.

I'm all for teams being allowed to tear up a contract after a failed test. The penalties aren't severe enough.

Tear up the contract so another team can sign the player at a lower salary? I can only think of one owner that would make that choice.

Melky Cabrera was the same way. Marginal hitter who all of a sudden became a batting champ but didn't necessarily gain any power. PED's help in a big way. Makes your hands quicker and I've read can help eyesight

The MLBPA should be all about tearing up a contract once a player fails a drug test. All the players want it so it will leave the game and that's who they back. You'll see it come to a halt once you take money away. Currently there is too much to gain and not enough to lose

Are PEDs that bad? Keep PEDs out of HS and college but let the pros take advantage of them under a doc's supervision. Set guidelines and make the players stick to them. It'll give us a better product and help the players with the grind and injuries.

 

I can see a valid counter argument that allowing PEDs force every player to take them to compete. Aren't there PEDs that are safe? Then again, you'll have players taking PEDs outside of the guidelines.
