Id give him more credit but it's the Angels farm system that's giving him, you, and everyone else following it something to write about...   Stuff's happening for the first time in a while.

The irony is that we all just kept writing even when there wasn't much to write about.

If you look at Mike Trout's first go at it with the AZL Angels & Low-A, his numbers are strikingly similar to Jones' in OBP, Power, Speed & Contact BA). Both playing an exceptional CF too.

I did some research and not only is this kid extremely athletic, but he's got a good sports pedigree and like Trout, seems to have a very good head on his shoulder. Like Trout, he had some good parents (though his dad passed away a while back).

I'm really excited about this kid.

Don't look now, but Baldaquin is hitting .333 across his last ten games and is turning into a solid defender.  I just had my annual trip down to So-Cal and got to catch them in action.  Baldaquin looked surprisingly good.   Much better than last year.

That was the buzz during the Spring, if I remember correctly. It's a shame he got injured, because if he could develop into even a bench player, that would be great.

Kevin Grendell made his AA debut tonight.  1.2ip, 0h, 0er, 3bb, 4k.  On the season he has a 3.12 era in 43.1ip, 29h, 26bb, and 73k.  LHed reliever who was in the bmore system and got a 50 game suspension for an over the counter banned supplement.  Was an 11th round pick in 2012.  About to be 23yo on August 22nd.  Could see him on the mlb club some time next year.

I haven't had a chance to see him yet. Another lefty that has my eye is Chris O'Grady. Coming into this year he was picked up in the rule 5 draft. Lefty specialist runs his fastball at 92-93 regularly. Things didn't work out and he was returned to the Angels who brought up the idea of stretching him out once all the injuries hit. So far, O'Grady's really taken to it. He's maintaining his velocity and since he already had a solid change up, he didn't need to start from scratch.

I think he's what Ken Rosenthal meant when he said the Angels would rather transition some of their young relievers into starters before chasing veteran free agents.

It's well documented that our farm system is less that um shall we say.....good.  Most of that comes from the fact that our AA/AAA and for the most part high A teams have very little in the way of future major league talent.  Although I will say that the A+ team got some recent promotions of guys with some potential.  No one that is going to find their way into a top 100 any time soon, but guys that have some ability.

Even with the dearth of upper level talent, there are a few guys that we could be seeing in the majors next year. Here is who I think will crack their way into the majors at some point in 2017.  A few of which will get a cup of coffee by the end of the year.  Here are some names to be aware of on the pitching side.

SP

Nate Smith - we all know Nate.  He seemed a lock to get some time this year at some point, but he has struggled mightily as of late.  with a mid 7 era in his last 5 starts.  Nonetheless, he'll probably make a couple of starts this year and have a shot at the rotation next year.  He'll probably end up as 6th or 7th on the depth chart for 2017.  fastball sits at 88-92 with a plus change up and good control.  profiles as a back end starter.

Troy Scribner - 25yo former Houston farm hand that has done very well this season.  Had another nice start tonight going 7ip with 3h, 1er, 2bb, and 5k.  On the season he's throw 101.2ip, with 69h, 38bb, and 92k for a 3.01 era.  Another guy who isn't going to light up the radar gun, but seems to induce weak contact with only 260h in 329.1ip in his minor league career.  He also misses bats with 378k.  Could move ahead of Smith on the depth chart soon.

Jordan Kipper - a 23yo sinker baller whose that sits in the low 90's and tops out at 94.  he's still 23 yo and has done well in AA this year with a 3.45era in 120ip.  113h, 35bb, and 69k.  Struggled last year in A+, but missed more bats.  A 9th rounder in the 2014 draft, he might struggle at altitude next year assuming he starts at SLC.  Sinkers don't sink there.  Probably ends up another back end starter, but if anyone could be the next Shoemaker, it's him.

Victor Alcantara - 23yo fireballer with a plus slider.  Touches 100mph at times but typically sits in the mid 90's.  Had a very good 2014 at Burlington, but struggled last year and has been pretty meh in the pitcher friendly confines of dickey stevens park this year.  Another guy who has seen his k rate drop with his promotion to AA.  Struggles with command and seems destined for the pen although we have been saying that for awhile now and the halos continue to leave him as a starter.  If there is a pitcher in the halos system who could suddenly turn into a top of the rotation arm, it's him.  But in all likelihood he becomes a high leverage reliever.

Kyle McGowin - Kyle has had a tough season in AAA with an era in the mid 6's.  Tops out at 95, but generally sits in the low 90's.  Nasty slider.  Doesn't seem to be progressing as a starter and with his two pitch mix (change up is a WIP), he's another pen candidate.  He could see a tick up in velo if moved there which i wouldn't mind seeing sooner than later.

Alex Meyer - top of the rotation stuff is well documented.  So is his lack of control and shoulder issues.  Maybe they fix him.  Likely he ends up in the pen.  Fingers crossed that he becomes a high leverage reliever at least.

Again, there isn't a sure fire rotation arm in this mix and the next wave at high A has really struggled this year so don't expect much from that crew.  Jake Jewell has 97 in his repertoire, and a good change up but he's currently rocking a mid 6's era at the IE.  There is also Jeremy Rhoades who sits in the low 90's and touches 95.  He was a closer in college so we might see a move to the pen for him soon as he's also carrying an era above 6 this year.  Jared Ruxer cruised through burlington and got promoted to the ie but has struggled in his first few starts.  And Justin Anderson has also struggled at A+ topping out at 93mph as a starter and carrying an era around 6.

If anyone is going to leapfrog the A+ guys, it's gonna be Greyson Long except he hasn't pitched since may supposedly nursing a shoulder issue that is said to be minor.  It appears he's being treated with kid gloves but could be in AA by mid next year.  He's got a low 90's fastball that touches 94/95 and a plus change up.

Jonah Wesely is another guy that could move quick.  He's coming off TJ surgery and was very good at Burlington last year.  Another AA candidate for 2017.

RP

Middleton - a once forgotten man, Key has been touching 100mph and has been very good in his short time at AA with 18k in 15ip.  He really turned a corner in june and has had a 1.17era in his last 23ip with 35k and only given up 13h and 7bb.  Struggled with command early in the year but that seems a thing of the past now.  We'll see him next year for sure.

Eduardo Paredes - another high velo guy who dominated last year in burlington and was promoted to AA from A+ early this year.  Pretty much just ok since then as his secondary offerings still need work.  But he's a strike thrower.

DeLoach - a soft tossing LHer who kills lefites.  Could see him this year at some point.  Maybe.  Could be successful if used properly.

Austin Adams - another hard thrower that hasn't pitched since mid july.  Not sure what wrong with him, but he could turn a corner quickly if he figures out how to throw strikes.  22bb in 34.2ip this year, but 52k.

Jose Valez - and Eppler clean peanut.  26yo pickup from the detroit system.  has a 0.70era at SLC in 25.2ip with 28k, 13h and 11bb since we acquired him.  Not sure why he hasn't been called up as of yet.

The Richards situation is a potential game changer for 2017.  Having him in the rotation with Shoe and Skaggs gives me a bit of optimism.  On top of that, arms like Cam, JC Ramirez, Guerra, Middleton, Valez, and if they convert Alcantara could pay dividends very soon.  Plus, some progression from Paredes, and a couple of the others above, suddenly we've got some actual depth in the pen.  Guys with high octane fastballs that can miss bats.  Even if Garrett opts for TJ surg, 2017 could be a good opportunity for a bunch of these guys to get their feet wet and to see what we've actually got.

I watched Castillo pitch tonight.  I'm not gonna lie, I'm giddy.  It's just one performance, but after actually watching him (over video of course), I'm beginning to think I need to readjust my rankings.  He looked REALLY good.  The ball was exploding out of his hand, the batters were consistently behind his fastball, which was sitting 92-93.  It looked firm enough that if I was told he was thrown 96+ I probably would've believed it.
