Ian Happ, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2015 draft, was promoted from AAA Iowa to help cover a series of minor injuries among lineup regulars.

The switch-hitting infielder-outfielder was in the lineup, batting second and playing right field.

The Cubs now have their last five No. 1 picks on the roster, including Javy Baez (2011), Albert Almora Jr. (2012), Kris Bryant (2013), Kyle Schwarber (2014).

Well when you're trash for a decade you get to collect top picks and I guess a championship see the Astros (who will get a ring this fall)

You still need to draft intelligently. Having your last 5 1st round picks in the starting lineup at 1 time is pretty amazing. Another thing that stands out is that they are all position players. Most teams go after pitching.

There is no question they have drafted well but among the 5 you mentioned none were taken later than the 9th pick.   That makes "drafting intelligently" a lot easier..

BTW -- the Cubs had two other first round picks since taking Baez in 2011, both in 2012.... the 43rd overall pick Pierce Johnson and the 56th pick Paul Blackburn -- both are in AAA.  Johnson appears to have washed out as a SP and is now working out of the pen where he's got an BB/9 over 7, and Blackburn has been traded twice first to Seattle, then Oakland.   I'd say Blackburn was a pretty astute pick as well, even if he hasn't yet been up to MLB.

The Angels BTW haven't had a draft pick inside the top 10 in 20 years...  but when they did, they seemingly drafted intelligently..   Troy Glaus.  Before him, it was Darin Erstad.

Notable exceptions though were college LHP Brian Anderson being taken 3rd overall in 1993 and HS OF McKay Christensen being taken 6th overall in 1994.    Christensen only had 146 career MLB PA's, and Anderson had at best a so-so MLB career. (4.74 career ERA, 1.35 career WHIP, only 4.3 Ks/9 innings).

Christensen pick was a questionable pick due to his commitment to his mission..    Despite that and maybe as a testament to his ability -- the dude was in the majors at 23 after only 944 minor league at bats -- less than 300 of those above High A....   Baseball was just second to his faith.

Say what you will about Anderson, he went from college to MLB after all of 4 minor league starts.   He was rushed due to the woeful state of those early 90s Angels teams and yet he still managed to carve out a decent 13 year MLB career.   He was also the central figure in one of Bavasi's biggest flubs -- remember they failed to offer him a contract before the deadline so he was going to become a FA and the Angels traded him to Cleveland for whatever they could get..  (Grimsley and Pep Harris)
