Jesus released by Dipoto

Montero that is. Blue Jays immediately picked him up. I guess he had a rough spring.

Jesus Montero's lone noteworthy moment was back in 2012 when he threw Mike Trout out trying to steal third, preventing just the third ever 30HR/50SB season.

Not a productive trade for either team (Montero for Pineda, the centerpieces).

One can't hit, and the other can't stay healthy.

the yankees have got quite a bit of value out of pineda, and they'll get more. his injuries definitely derailed him, but he had a good year last year coming off injury.

What a fall from grace. That guy was a top prospect. Consistent underperformance and weight issues. Supposedly an asshole to boot.

You have to keep in mind, Montero was a Yankees prospect, and any prospect in that organization (or Boston or Texas for that matter) automatically lands himself in the top 100 if he does anything remotely well. John Sickels has said as much.

We can call it media bias but I think it's more accurate to say that strong prospects don't always come from strong systems. I typically use Grichuk as an example. He garnered practically no recognition as an Angels prospect because he played in a weak system and thus was over looked by a bias media. Once he went to the Cards, he became a darling of trade reports and a "sleeper" among experts.

So there is a bias amongst the media regarding prospects of different systems. How else can we explain Montero being labeled the next Miguel Cabrera if it weren't for some media outlet, likely on the east coast peddling this hype?

And to bring this one full circle, Jerry Dipoto as interim GM for the D-Backs was reamed by the media for not accepting a trade offer for Dan Haren that went public out of NY. They wanted to send Jesus Montero to AZ straight up for Haren. Dipoto refused, and instead accepted the Angels offer of Skaggs and Corbin.

Everyone thought the Angeks got a steal and that tmDipoto was stupid for not taking Montero from NY. Fast forward a few years and both Corbin and Skaggs look like they'll project nicely into the middle of a rotation shortly.

I think the truth is, real talent evaluators, major league scouts knew Montero would never stick behind the plate and that his work ethic was non existent, he has a false sense of entitlement and his bat is too slow to punish major league pitching.
