Live Standup Comedy

Recommended Posts

Garry Shandling's passing got me to thinking about the times I use to go to the Hermosa Beach Comedy and Magic club to catch a live comedy show.  It has been years since I have gone to see a live standup show.  The last one I went to, which was just by chance, was at a Hotel in Northern Scotland back in 2011.  When I get to travel for work I will sometimes try to find the local comedy venue, but it seems like the ones I have attended over the past few years were not stand up but Improve gigs, similar to the Groundlings.  Which made me wonder, are the hey days of Live Standup gone?  I know that LA still has the Icehouse, The Comedy Store, The Laugh Factory, but is stand up comedy still available around the country?

Wife and I went to a comedy club in DC and the warm up act was pretty good but you could sense he was running out of stuff, they wanted him to go longer than his 20. The reason was the main act hadn't showed up.

The guy was an hour late and when he arrived he was too lit up to remember his act so he just stood there and kept reciting he was late making stupid gestures, like that was funny. After about 20 minutes the audience was getting tired of his shit so he went gutter, no real routine, just saying offensive stuff. What an asshole.

I have seen a number of standup comics live. My lineup includes (and this goes back for years):

Rodney Dangerfield

Totie Fields

Rich Little

Jeff Foxworthy

Jon Caparulo

Kathleen Madigan

Steven Wright

Henry Cho

Two that I missed, that I really wish that I had seen are Richard Pryor and George Carlin.

Flappers in Burbank is a good venue. If you get on their email list you get a heads-up when they have bigger comics drop in to test new material. Got to see Bill Burr and Jim Jeffries that way.

Speaking of Jeffries, check out his show Legit.

Saw Carlin back in the 90s in Colorado Springs...then met him the next day. He was a humble down-to-earth guy.

He was my all-time favorite comic. Robin Williams was high on my list as well, but I never had a chance to see him live.

Speaking of comedy clubs, we have a good one here in Denver (Comedy Works). Portland also has a good one (Helium).
