Baseball legend and former Arizona Diamondbacks broadcaster Joe Garagiola, Sr., has died, the D-backs announced Wednesday. Garagiola was 90 years old.

A true baseball broadcasting legend.

Growing up in the 80's, I loved listening to Vin and Joe G call those Saturday games of the week.  Cliche but they don't make announcing teams like that anymore.

The two best television announcing teams of my life as a fan have been Enberg and Drysdale, and Scully and Garagiola. Joe and Vinnie were the absolute best story tellers.

One of the great ambassadors of the game, a real throwback to an era when players and fans weren't separated by the financial chasm that exists today. He struck me as a guy who would have sat down with an average fan and talked baseball for hours.

Traded to the New York Giants in 1954, Garagiola was behind the plate when the Cardinals' Stan Musial stepped up to it.

 

"This was the fourth team I was traded to when there was only eight in the league and that told me that I was either wanted, or modeling uniforms," Garagiola said. "I didn't know which. And the great Stan Musial comes up to hit, and apparently he didn't see the papers, so he taps the plate and he looks at me, and he backs out and says, 'What the heck are you doing there?' I said, 'I just got traded, Stan.' He said, 'You did, when?' I said, 'This morning.' He kind of looked stunned, and he said, 'Why don't you quit?' You know what I said to him? I said, 'Now?'"

the obits for Joe G. all mention that he was a color analyst on Halos broadcasts for one year in the 90's --- I don't seem to remember that.

 

I remember Sparky Anderson doing that as well as Joe Torre.  I don't remember Joe G. with the Halos.

 

with Scully on network and certainly with Curt Gowdy on the Game of the Week (Tony Kubek, too).

 

on the Today Show (several stints if I recall right)..........

 

he and Yogi were boyhood pals.

 

The "Bob Uecker" schitck really began with Joe G's deprecating humor.

 

I think the line "I signed wit the Cardinals for $5 -- my dad paid it" started with Joe G and Uecker adapted it for his use.
