french government regulation going too far

Recommended Posts

Certainly seems like a good idea...and it looks like the law actually facilitates the process. Also appears that at least one of the larger groups think it's a good idea, probably in part because it removes some liability from them. Legally they had to remove dates near the use by expiration and then had to deal with foraging. Now, they are helping ensure it is put to good use.

Some supermarkets doused binned food in bleach, reportedly to prevent food poisoning from items taken from bins.

Carrefour, France’s biggest supermarket group, said it welcomed the law, which would build on food donations its supermarkets already made.

Crucially the law will also make it simpler for the food industry to give some excess products directly to food banks from factories. Until now, if a dairy factory made yoghurts carrying the brand name of a supermarket, it had been a long, complex process to donate any excess to charity. Now it would be faster and easier. “That is very important for food banks because this is a real source of quality products, coming straight from the factory,” Bailet said.

I remember when I worked at a grocery store they would have us toss all the dairy that was a few days before the sell by date and thinking how much of a waste it was when they could have donated it or given it to homeless people out back.  The amount of waste at grocery stores in industrialized countries could probably go a long way towards feeding those who don't get enough to eat.
